What's amazing in my mind is how far the surround field has come in games.
I mean to say ambient sounds, like birds chirping or someone sneaking up behind you. Being able to hear where a gun shot is coming from before you turn around and empty your arsenal.

For best sound it would be tough to beat Ratchet and Clank.
COD4, Farcry 2 and Fallout 3 are standouts aswell.

Dead space... there's a reason why it won most sound awards this year. It's phenomenal.

Uncharted is also very good.

A lot of people don't realize it because they never gave the game a chance due to the unique control system when it was first released...

Lair has a pretty kick ass sounscape with all kinds of stuff flying past you and around you!

Everything else that I would mention has already been listed by others.

What the hell? Why has Warhawk not been mentioned!? I used that game to test and make sure my speakers where calibrated and hooked up properly. You can perfectly hear everything in the exact area that it is in. I remember throwing a mine down and then just slowly moving the right analog stick to make the sound spin around the room. Just because it sounded so cool.

What further confuses me is the fact that most of the games listed up there are multi-platform - therefor are compressed Dolby Digital. I've never been impressed with a multi-platform game's audio... but hey, whatever.

Oh, Socom has some cool gun effects!

I was also blown away by the sound in MGS4. The ambience with the music with different instruments in different speakers in surround. The same the boss fights and being able to hear voices in all directions, it was truly something.

I have to agree LAIR had 7.1 surround sound and
I believe it's the only game at the moment with that
sound..if only all developers took advantage of the
blu-ray and put 7.1 on all releases!!

Warhawk has 7.1... Pretty sure MGS4 does as well. and Uncharted... Same with Stardust. No multiplatform games have it cause the 360 only supports 5.1 - but most of our exclusives have 7.1.

There's a dozen or so first-party games that claim to support 7.1 LPCM and probably the same again third-party, but 5.1 and above. There's so many downloadable games and for the following reason it's hard to keep track of numbers.

Only SCEJ really publishes/acknowledges these specs, otherwise you have to get the info straight from the dev or test for yourself.
