Default DVD question on blu ray

Hello everyone I am new to this whole blu ray thing and just have a question. I have a hd tv that has a top resolution of 1080i, I have a blu ray player with hdmi cables that also plays DVDs, my question is that when I play regular DVDs on my blu ray player it still says it's in hd and at a resolution of1080i, so is this right? It looks very clear like a blu ray disc but am I geting the full hd experience with these DVDs or do I have to rebuy them on blu ray? I have some blu ray discs but I really don't want to rebuy my movies if I don't have to

Blu-ray players upconvert DVDs to 1080p, 1080i, 720p, and 720i depending on the connection. Its not true high-definition like a Blu-ray Disc, the player is actually scaling or adding lines to fill the HD resolution.

Here is a link to a better explanation at Cnet.com

Yup, the player upconverts / smoothes out the DVD (probably better then the TV can do) to make it more pleasing, but in the end the detail was never there on the DVD and won't be there on the upconverted image.

I already own these on DVD and gladly bought the Blu-rays without hesitation:

Young Frankensteind, Dr. No, Die Another Day, The Guardian, and Madagascar.

Not only is the video quality better but the audio also gets an HD uprade as well.

I've replaced several of my DVDs with blu-rays. The video quality is always better, but can vary depending on the movie. But as steve dave pointed out, the (lossless) audio of a blu-ray is often worth the upgrade alone.

Buy the films that you absolutely love. No point in buying stuff that has no repeatability value. Rent them instead.
