here's my thoughts:

The Golden Globes are a JOKE. It's an awards show put on by a very small group of journalists, and they basically invite the stars they want to show up to their party. This is why people like Pitt, Depp, Jolie, etc get nominated by them even for roles when no other awards recognize their performances.

How this ever became the #2 movie awards to watch is baffling to me. They have no credibility whatsoever.

Y'know, back in the 80's/90's when the Oscars were sane, respectable and could think up their own nominees, the GG's were literally a joke. A Ted Turner joke, and those were popular in their day.
(Well, okay, they were a Pia Zadora joke too, but as the MST3K guys joked, we used to think that was funny and now we can't remember why... )

This was around the time that Ted thought his little "Superstation TBS" was an actual broadcast cable network, and tried to compete with what was then the Big Three:
He kept pestering the Olympic committee to give him the broadcast rights instead of icky old ABC or NBC, and when he kept being outbid (now, how could that happen? ) he partnered together with Russia's disgruntlement at being left out of the '84 Olympics' attention, and became the "sole exclusive" network deal to broadcast the Goodwill Games to the US.
There are many things that will be carved on Turner's tombstone (he's still alive, isn't he?), and "The Goodwill Games" are one of them. If the Goodwills aren't still being held or aired today...there's a reason for that.

Now, go back over those first two paragraphs, take out "Olympics" and "Goodwill Games", and insert "Oscars" and "Golden Globes".
The association with Capt. Ted and The Self-Delusion Channel permanently established the GG's image before the 00's as, quote, "the Goodwill Games of movie awards".
And to this day, it's a reputation well-deserved. They're still a cheap plastic knockoff for folks who can't get the real thing, and we STILL don't care.

If you wanna stamp out overpraise, the first place anyone should look is at GRAVITY. Captain Phillips being a close second.

How this ever became the #2 movie awards to watch is baffling to me. They have no credibility whatsoever.
They started back in the 30's, when there were either the Big Two, or the various industry Guild awards.
The GG's were put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and back in the days when there were Press Associations, that must've been big. This was back in the days when the Oscars were a private industry banquet at the Coconut Grove, so the GG's were seen as the same sort of no-outsiders-allowed industry fest for itself.

(To this day, the GG's are still held as a table banquet-awards, and the fun part of watching the awards are that drinks are served.
Last year, Jodie Foster got to embarrass herself by all but outing herself onstage; let's see who has a few too many this year.)

Nowadays, now that studio-sanctioned movie press has pretty much vanished with Louis B. Mayer and Daryl Zanuck, no one knows who or what the Hollywood Foreign Press Association IS. It seems to be a club journalists can join for the right annual fee, and non-journalists can join as "Associate members", also for paying a fee--Heard one time from a reporter who'd seen a HFPA reporter on a movie press junket, and was astounded at what a complete star-kissup the guy was.
That pretty much sums up the GG nominations: They take all the FYC flyers they get from the studios, believe them willingly and completely, and pick them out of a hat: "Sandra Bullock for Best Actress!" "Saving Mr. Banks for Best Picture!"
The only folks who pay attention to them nowadays are the armchair Buzz-Boyz who believe them too, but having the GG say them first helps us see how plausible or ridiculous all the "Future Oscar Contenders" look in the daylight.

I'll be watching. I find the split between Drama and Comedy rather arbitrary.

Pretty surprise almost none picked Jared Leto to win for best supporting actor!! by far one of the best acting performance this year!!...makes me wonder if people even saw Dallas Buyers Club.

The one i really hope she wins tonight its Greta Gerwing!!!
