i debated if i should put this in the players section or ps3 section of the forum, i decided here since you all own ps3's. my blu-ray standalone just kicked out on me, and i need a new player since i cannot wait for the oppo's release. i have decided to grab a ps3 since i havnt owned one yet and i am a gamer so........
can someone break down for me differences in ps3 models as far as games, online, blu-ray functions are concerned...... true-hd and dtsma are requirements, my understanding is you cannot bitstream with the ps3 but it will internally decode these now, is this true of all models? i have done some research into this but i would like first hand experience from you guys as to which models do what since there are two or three available at the moment! thanks |

the only difference between the 80g and the 160g that is available now is the hard drive space. if you dont save media on your ps3 then theres no reason to get a 160g.. its overkill. the ps3 can internally decode those codecs. there is no other difference between the two other than that in terms of hardware. earlier versions were backward compatable, had extra usbs, etc... but the two latest versions are identical except for hard drives.

If you don't need PS2 backwards compatibility, get the cheapest one, and use the money you saved to purchase a 2.5" SATA notebook HDD. You can get a 500 GB for roughly $100 online. This gives you plenty of future storage space. I personally have a 40 GB with an upgraded hard drive of 120 GB and am already looking to upgrade it again. I've been very pleased with it, and I have a PS2 hooked up to my TV for my PS2 games, so I wasn't as worried about BC.

i have a PS2 as well, but i have a BC PS3, so far the best perks i've found to my model that current models don't have is, is of course the BC which provides Gran Turismo 4 at 1080i (super drool), which u can do on a PS2 w/ component cables i suppose...
the SACD. Sgt Peppers, Dark Side of hte Moon, and Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto in surround are downright immaculate (hyper drool) ...ok after 2 mins of day dreaming about listening to either anytime soon... htere's also the Card reader slots... they're a fantastic way to provide a slideshow when you or someone goes on vacation, or simply coming back from an event and can't wait to see the pics. just throw your CF or SD card right in. then there's hte 2 extra USB slots, considering i use a keyboard, and the wired PS2 USB headset, i can keep my controller cable plugged in as well as have a slot open for my external HDD. but as Marquoz said, if you have no need for any of these things, just get the cheapest one you can find. |

I actually have a question for everyone too. I know this has been mentioned before but I didn't know where and I didn't want to start a new thread. Anyhoo, I have a launch 60 GB and everything works perfectly but the fan runs constantly if Im running something disc based (a game thats not on my HDD, DVD, Bluray etc).
Its not a huge deal but one of the most gratifying things early on was making fun of my XBOX friends about how absurdly loud their crappy system is, and now my PS3 is just as loud 90% of the time!!! My HDD is nearly to the brim so I was wondering if that has anything to do with it, maybe if I upgrade and have more space the system can calm down a little a bit. If anyone has any tips let me know, thanks!! Oh and its in completely open space so its not struggling for air or anything. |

As for which PS3 to buy, the current 80 and 169 GB consoles are identical, except for hard drive size. The new consoles don't have SACD playback, PS2 backward compatibility, memory card slots, or two of the original 4 USB ports, so they shouldn't be considered features unless you buy used. All currently sold PS3s offer identical Blu-ray support, including BD 2.0 and Live profiles, decoding of all lossless audio soundtracks, and 1080p upscaling of DVDs. If you want more hard drive space than 80 on your new PS3, I would suggest buying an 80GB model and swapping the drive yourself. I swapped my 60GB drive for a 320GB drive for $72, which is a cheaper than buying a 160 GB model. If you're a gamer too, then buying a PS3 as a Blu-ray player is a no brainer. |

Gran Turismo 4, the PS2 game, runs at 1080i resolution.
i emphasized the component cables, but because i never bought component cables for the PS2 or PS3. so i wouldn't know Quote:

the newer models with a 65mm chip don't run hot enuogh to put the fan into overdrive. in any case, one is not better than the other, unless you're concerned about the 3db boost in sound of the fan kicking up. i have the MGS4 80Gb with a 90mm chip, and the fan kicks up even when watching DVDs, the noise is too little and the PS3 is well ventilated as it's practically outside, where it gets its direct fresh air from the balcony door. if yuo're concerned about overheating, vacuum your PS3 vents every now and then, but it shuold be an issue. |
