Have any of you been able to successfully use your iPhone and/or Apple Watch with your Discover credit card with contactless terminals at businesses in Canada, Europe, Japan or other countries? Discover says their cards can be used at businesses globally that accept Diners Club International, and at Japanese businesses that accept JCB. Every Discover card also has the Diners Club International logo on the back. However, while Diners Club International shares an EMV AID with Discover, their numbers start with 3 (like American Express) instead of 6 and are only 14 digits long instead of Discover's 16. JCB card numbers are 16 digits long but they also start with 3 and unlike Discover and Diners Club International, JCB has its own EMV AID. Some businesses and vending machines in Japan have card terminals capable of accepting the global EMV contactless standard in addition to Japan's own FeliCa-based QUICPay and/or iD. Those that do will have an acceptance label with the contactless logo (the four curved bars you see on newer credit cards) in addition to QUICPay and iD. You'll need to tell the clerk you're using "NFC Pay" or press the button with the aforementioned contactless logo on the vending machine in order for the terminal to know you're using an EMV contactless card as opposed to a QUICPay, iD, or prepaid transit "IC" card. Does this confuse the card terminal, especially with Apple Pay's virtual card numbers, or does the transaction run successfully? If it does, does your receipt say Discover or Diners/JCB? I would love to be able to use mine when traveling to these places when they fall into Discover's rotating bonus categories.
UPDATE: Discover's rotating categories only apply to domestic transactions, not international. Last edited by BijouMan; 02-10-2022 at 06:32 AM. |
