Default PS3 DG720 HDMI Audio

So I already know that this is a stupid question, but I've been searching the forums and all the answers I am finding are either above my head or not directly related to my concern. So sorry in advance if I'm littering the board with duplicate threads.

I just bought a DG720 as a receiver for, among other things, my Playstation 3. However when I connect the system via HDMI I only get video, and the only way I can get audio from my receiver is if I use an optical cable or an analogue one. While this isn't the worst thing to ever happen to a person I am really hoping to eliminate the clutter and use one cable for all of these connections. I thought that I would be able to go through the Playstation 3 settings and manually change the audio output but when I choose "automatic" in the setting it tells me "This HDMI device cannot be used for audio output," so I am totally out of ideas. Has anyone encountered this previously? I am assuming that it is a ridiculously simplistic problem and I am just not intelligent enough to understand what to do.

Anyway, if anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

Per the Sony site, your AVR will accept LPCM over HDMI. What do you have the audio output set to on your PS3? Make sure it is set to LPCM (not bitstream). That may be your problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I actually am incapable of doing that as at that part I am getting the message about the device not being capable of audio output. I appreciate the help though.

Also, are you getting just video or video and audio passed to your TV? Make sure you set your AVR to NOT pass audio to your TV. There will be a setting like HDMI Audio Out that you'll want to set to off/no. With HDMI audio, the source will detect the lowest audio-capable device and send only the audio that it will support. In passing HDMI audio through to your TV, your PS3 will only output 2-channel stereo because that is all your set will accept.

See the site below for PS3 settings and what they do. You will need to set the BD / DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) to LPCM (about halfway down the page). Where is the message coming from, the PS3?

1- I am only sending video to my TV
2- I am going to try again with the settings right now but yes, the error is coming from the ps3 itself.

(thank you so much for your help)

Hmmm, I've checked and the BD/DVD Audio Output is on Linear PCM but the primary sound settings are still telling me that the HDMI device cannot be used for audio output...

It is in the PS3 settings, I don't own the PS3 but you need to set the audio output to hdmi, it is prolly set to optical or however you had it set up before. The 720 will pass audio, I know cause I used to have the 710. The receiver will be almost completely plug and play.

And under the audio output settings, make sure HDMI is chosen and all of the boxes are checked that are available.

Haha, yes.

When the automatic setup failed I moved to manually checking but even when I input what is seemingly the correct information I am not getting any audio...

I'm reading about HDMI cables, I am not sure what type I am using but is it at all possible that I'm using an older cable (1.1?) and that this cable would prevent me from outputting audio?

All category 2 cables will work fine. HDMI versions apply to devices only. To test your theory, just switch the 2 cables you currently are using (PS3-AVR-TV). If the problem persists, it's not the cable (which I don't think it is, anyway). It's something in your PS3 and/or AVR settings (unless your AVR is not working properly).

This could be an HDCP issue. Is your TV HDCP compliant? I recently helped a friend set up his new DG920 and PS3, but we encountered the exact problem that you describe. His TV is an older model rear projection CRT with DVI input, but no HDMI input. Although we set the receiver to not pass the audio to the TV, it wouldn't play any audio because of the lack of HDCP handshaking using an HDMI to DVI cable for video. We got around this by running HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver for audio and component cables from the PS3 directly to the TV for the video.

There could absolutely be something to this. I didn't mention I was running HDMI to DVI as I assumed the television was not involved in the process. However, I do believe that it is HDCP compliant as I previously ran the PS3 directly to the television (HDMI-->DVI) while running analog audio to my old receiver. However, if I read your post correctly it seems that you are saying that I won't be getting both audio and video out of my current set up due to my television?

Correct. To verify, try running just HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver and set the audio to go through HDMI; then run video from the receiver into the DVI input on your TV (I believe this is what you were doing originally). At this point you will get video but no audio. Now unplug the cable from the DVI input and you should then get audio through the speakers connected to the receiver (but no video of course). If this turns out to be true then you have the exact same issue my friend had.

The best solution we came up with is to run HDMI from the PS3 into the receiver for HD audio (be sure to set the PS3 to output audio as LPCM via HDMI), and then run component video cables from the PS3 directly to the TV. Obviously this means that you can't use the receiver to select the PS3's video feed and will need to select the appropriate input via your TV, but I believe it is a small compromise that is outweighed by the benefit of HD audio on blu-ray.

If you need a component cable for the PS3, look here. Or you can pick one up at a local Gamestop for $25 (which is what we did since my friend didn't want to wait to have one shipped).

As I mentioned in an earlier post, HDMI audio will downgrade to the lowest common denominator. When you run HDMI to DVI, you are essentially telling your output device that there is no audio, so no audio will output. That is your problem, and I don't think there is a way to get around it. Like was mentioned above, you may be able to output audio over HDMI to your receiver and video through component.
