This may sound like a complete newb question but I just wanted to know why I can watch some movies at 21 and it be loud as hell and watch some at 36 and it not be all that loud? I was watching my Entourage DVD and it was much louder at 23 than my Wanted & Underworld Blus at 35. Just wanted to know why this was. Thanks

It's basically dependent on a few things: 1. Your Blu-ray movies would be using lossless codecs, this makes the movies have more dynamic range, so the stuff that is quiet is quieter and the loud stuff is louder 2. They would be mastered at different reference volumes most likely, especially because entourage is made for TV and needs a higher reference volume with less dynamic range |

Entourage is a TV show, and mixed to come across easily on the crappiest of TV speakers. That is to say, it has a very limited dynamic range.
Movies are designed to have an enormous dynamic range, so the average volume will sound quieter at the same point of your amp's dial. The upside is that movies have heaps of headroom for the big explosions you love so much, whereas Entourage is pretty much at 100% all the time, so if something did explode in that show, it wouldn't be able to get much louder. |
