Default DLP vs. 120 hz.

I currently own an older 720p Samsung 50" LCD DLP. I really like it but an ready for an upgrade. I have a wall unit and the thinness of an LCD is of no advantage to my set up. I am curious if I go with a replacement top series 1080p Samsung DLP, how much less quality will it be compared to a same size 50" Samsung 120hz LCD? I can save a decent amount of coin going with the DLP but I also want it to perform well. Any opinions?

I see no advantages (not counting weight/size) of LCD over a DLP RPTV. Your picture quality will be just as good, if not better (particularly if you go with the newer LCD DLP technology). The only thing you won't be able to get would be the motion interpolation crap being marketed these days, but I cannot understand why anyone would want that anyway (and you won't need it on a DLP). Different strokes, I suppose.

Go with the DLP.

I can say when watching football in HD on cable with my non 120 hz 720 dlp when compared to my fathers 120 hz samsung lcd, I have alot for pixelation when fast camera panning is going on especially in the crown. Thats what I thought the 120 hz is for, to help refresh faster to correct the pixellation during high speed camera movement...

The pixelation is caused by the source. 120Hz is supposed to help the TV so there is no motion blur or judder. I don't know too much about rear projections, but I don't think they have a problem with motion the way LCD's do.

I'd recommend looking at the newer plasmas by Panasonic, Pioneer , and Samsung. PQ is excellent (in my opinion these offer the best pq on the market outside of oled). You get better viewing angles than dlp or lcd, plus you won't have to worry about lag or motion blur.

I was under the impression that 1080p DLPs are 120Hz. The series 7 DLPs are pretty sweet... and cheap.

I spoke with Samsung this morning. The level 2 tech guy (level 1 had no clue) stated that the latest DLP tv's have 120 hz. He says the 120hz when referring to LCd's and Plasmas are to help alleviate motion blur. He said that DLP's do not have motion blur problems such as LCD's. I asked him about the picture quality difference between a 50" DLP HL50A650 vs a samsung LCD with 120hz same size and he says it will be very close to the same high image quality.

The 50" Samsung LCD is selling for around $2000 where I can get the HL50A650 for $899 at Best buy.

If you have the extra cash go for the Series 7 LED... $1600 at BB. This set rivals the top of the line LCDs. I might be getting one soon, $1800, stand included. I'm pretty sure it's much cheaper around the web.

On line you can get the Samsung 61" DLP LED for about $1300. Cruntchfield had it ffor $1299 delivered with white glove service but it is sold out. Amazon may have a similar price. If you purchase a Samsung TV for over $1000 this month Samsung gives you a $200 NFL card. Since Samsung is shutting down production of their DLP line now is the time to buy.

According to the Samsung agent today. They anticipate a new DLP model later this year...

Somehow I would believe the announcements at the CES to Consumer Reports rather than a Samsung agent who is probably not in the loop. (But if the did have a change of heart and announced it officially I would be very happy!)
------------------------------------------------------------
Then there was one—in the rear-projection business

Samsung, one of the last two manufacturers of rear-projection televisions, today confirmed that it's joining the ranks of manufacturers who have exited that dwindling market segment. The company told us that it would continue selling its remaining RPTV sets through the first half of this year but would no longer make new sets. That leaves Mitsubishi as the only company still making RPTVs—at least for now.

Sales of RPTVs have dropped sharply over the past few years as sleek flat-panel LCD and plasma TVs have gotten bigger and cheaper, pushing the bulkier sets out of the picture. In 2004, sales of RPTV sets exceeded 3.5 million units, and there were more than a dozen brands on the market. In 2008, with just two brands remaining, analysts expected U.S. sales of rear-projection sets to total about half a million units, compared to 30 million LCD TVs and 4 million plasma TVs.

Many people think that of the Mitsu. I have two Samsung LED base DLPs (61" and 67") and I find the picture quality excellent.

Yeah I have never had a positive Mitsu experience in 4 years of selling TVs. Samsungs, Sonys, and Sharp pretty much dominate sales. Pioneer for the people that have wallets too big to sit with.
