Default Tobe Hooper: Was He Ever Good?

Question: Is Tobe Hooper a great director, in your opinion? Yes or No?
Was he a two-hit wonder (Texas, Poltergeist)? Up there with Craven or Carpenter?

Also there's: Salem's Lot (1979). Anything else?

As far as actual features go yes, his greatest films were those, but hasn't done much since.

I also enjoyed Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Lifeforce & The Funhouse. But I never thought of him as one of the top tier horror/sci-fi directors...

The original Salem's Lot tv miniseries. It's one of the best Stephen King adaptations.

Never was good IMO. I've always firmly believed that TCM was not as good as some claim and the Leatherface character was under/misused. He could have been scarier.

LOL. Did you get the idea from my post in the John Carpenter thread?

There are a few Tobe Hooper films that I have liked. Texas Chainsaw Massacre and part 2, and Poltergeist, also Salems Lot.
Lifeforce was passable, but I think pretty much everything else he did fell apart.

Wes Craven has made a lot of crap too. Deadly Friend anyone?

Every time someone mentions that movie, all I can think of is Mathilda May's memorable performance.

Ah-haha, yeah, I think that's probably why I listed it as one of his films that I enjoyed!

I always thought that TCM, TCM2 and Poltergeist were great. In fact, I believe that Poltergeist is one of the best horror movies ever made. JMO, of course. I never tire of watching it -- it was very well done.

As for Lifeforce, if it's the one I'm thinking of, any movie that features almost constant nudity like it did is worthy of an honorable mention.

Default Question.

Question: But was Poltergeist, Hooper or Spielberg? You've heard the rumors. Spielberg taking control. Any truth there?

I thought it was Hooper himself that said that Spielberg took control of the film. Ever time I watch Poltergeist I have always felt that it seems more like a Spielberg film.

I know. But I didn't want to push the point.

I've really been meaning to see Poltergeist...

Not sure if I should rent or blind buy.

Blind buy. It's a classic. To some: It's up there with E.T.

I bought it today. Was surprised how great it looked =o. Some of the special effects hold up really well.

The movie was impressive. Are the sequels worth checking out?

NO! Avoid them at all costs. Part two was bad ( it does have a couple moments that were okay-- the tequila worm!!) but Part three was just horrible. I forgot how bad it was until I watched it again on one of the movie channels last week. It is hard to believe that Heather O'Rourke has been dead twenty years. The last one was dedicated to her.

I think he was a 2 hit wonder. But (Texas & Polt) are classics!!
