Default Subwoofer Crossover

OK, so im setting audyssey again as my Denon flaked out after a 3 weeks. replacement now on site!!!

one thing i have never been happy with on the Denon is the bass response and how subtle the sub is, i did move from ported sub to a non ported which is probably why? ( im no expert) but how can a squueze a little bit more from the sub when running the calibration? my manual says set half volume and 80hz cross. can someone recommend a tweak that i can apply to the sub during setup? i dont want to shake the house though.

thanks

Man sorry to hear about your A/V issues.

Check this thread out it will definitely answer any questions you have about crossover frequencies. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=38765

Hope everything works out for you.

You can increase the volume on the back of the subwoofer to the three quarter point if you want. If you are not hearing good bass, it is not necessarily the fault of your receiver or the crossover setting. Most probably, it has something to do with the placement of the sub. Subwoofers are the most difficult of all the speakers to place in the correct spot in the room. Try putting the sub in a corner and see if you like the results better. If the sub becomes too boomy, move it slightly away from the walls.

There are several threads with sticky in the subwoofers section. Read A Guide to Subwoofers and A Guide to Subwoofers (Part II).

It is also helpful to read A Guide to Crossover Networks. The last section in the original post discusses crossover setting in detail.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you also set the crossover on the subwoofer to 80 HZ. Some subwoofer plate amps have a variable crossover control. Those are relics of the past. These days, HT receivers have dedicated subwoofer outputs. Some plate amps have LFE direct in like mine does. That is the one to connect to. That way, you'll bypass the subwoofers internal crossover frequency circuitry. I have a Yamaha but in its manual it will tell you to set the subwoofer's own crossover to the highest crossover setting. On my sub it's 200 HZ. But since I connect to LFE direct input, I don't have to worry about it. If however you are setting the sub to 80 HZ and then audyssey sets the Denon's crossover to 80 HZ, that is not good. You have effectively cascaded two 80 Hz high pass filters which in all probablity will adversely effect the bass response. It would even be worse if you had set the subwoofer crossover low, say 40 Hz or 50 Hz while on the Denon the crossover was set to 80 Hz. Then the result would be a hole in the bass response. Just make sure you have the subwoofer crossover set to the highest setting if audyssey is setting the crossover frequency in the Denon.

And take Big Daddy's advice and find the best room location for your sub. If you know for a fact that your sub is not ported but is definitely sealed, it might do better in or near a corner as suggested by Big Daddy. Or move it out of the corner one to four feet but staying close to one wall if the corner placement is too boomy.
