Default James Cagney on Blu-ray

Inspired by the success of my similar thread on Barbara Stanwyck here, I decided to create a thread based around one of my all time favorite actors.

Theatrical Films (He did do 1 TV movie, Terrible Joe Moran (1984), which has been released on DVD, although since I'm not sure it's an official release, it's not listed here. Special thanks to Doc Moonlight in the thread below for pointing this out):

The 1930s - Pre-Code era (January 1, 1930 - July 1, 1934):

Rest of the 1930s:

The 1940s:

The 1950s:

The 1960s:

The 1980s:

Foreign Blu-ray(s) (most of Cagney's remaining films are with Warner Bros., so not much chance of any other foreign Blu-ray releases outside of the release below or films already released in the U.S.):
(Note: This release is region free, as listed on this site, and the French subtitles are also apparently removable as well, as stated in the thread about this release on this site here)

Some Notable DVD Holdouts:
(Note: Similar to my other thread on Barbara Stanwyck, this is highlighting still in print releases and solo releases whenever possible. Also be noted that Blonde Crazy (1931) is only available as part of Forbidden Hollywood Volume 8.).

Of the hold-outs, The Roaring Twenties is top of my list. I also have a soft spot for Angels With Dirty Faces, but I understand that I shouldn't hold my breath for that one.

I've belatedly bought Footlight Parade (it hasn't arrived yet) & look forward to Mister Roberts.

A great thread for a great actor, who is criminally underrepresented on blu-ray.

I didn't include every film of his that's been released on DVD (I left out a few others as well), as otherwise this thread would have been way too long.

It was mentioned on the WAC podcast a little while back this year that Angels With Dirty Faces has legal issues that prevent Warner/WAC from issuing it on DVD/Blu-ray or having it available for digital purchase, and also restricting it from airing on TCM or other TV channels as well. They couldn't get into the exact reasons why (*although see the note below on a rumored possible reason why), but they said they were working to try to iron out those issues, and they couldn't comment further than that.

*Special Note: Prior to WAC's podcast confirming that Angels With Dirty Faces had legal issues, a post on the TCM message boards a little over a year ago claimed that they had heard somewhere that Angels With Dirty Faces and two other Warner-owned Cagney films (Ceiling Zero (1936) and Come Fill The Cup (1951)) had legal issues. As far as the reasons why, they said that for Angels With Dirty Faces, the rights (not specified whether the movie rights, underlying story rights, or both) for it had reverted around 2010 to the estate/heirs of screenwriter Rowland Brown, who wrote the script for the movie, and they apparently did not want to budge/negotiate on it with Warner. Given this is all from one random post online, I'd wouldn't necessarily take this as the truth (and I'm not sure if this is or isn't the truth), but it's worth mentioning.

Original source (WARNING: HEAVY SPOILERS FOR Angels With Dirty Faces IN THE LINK BELOW) (I've summarized the relevant part of it above anyways):

Hopefully any rights issues can be solved eventually. You can probably take a guess what movie is at the top of my wishlist.

Great thread!!!

I got the Cagney fever again last year and grabbed these as I was sick of waiting for them to get a Blu-Ray release. They all looked great and The Irish In Us was a blind buy too. Quality!

Thanks! I may update the DVD section in a little bit to include some other films that slipped my mind (mainly Devil Dogs Of The Air (1935) and What Price Glory (1952), and I'll probably include this one too and perhaps Boy Meets Girl (1938) mentioned above as well.

Shake Hands With The Devil (1959) will be released at some point by Kino in the U.S. on Blu-ray with a new 2K remaster:

Framed for manslaughter after he breaks a story about city corruption, reporter Frank Ross is sure he’ll prove his innocence and walk out of prison a free man. But that’s not how the system works at Rocky Point Penitentiary. There, cellblock guards are vicious, the jute-mill labor is endless, and the powers Ross fought on the outside conspire to keep him in. Frank’s hope is turned to hopelessness. And he’s starting to crack. Two of the screen’s famed tough guys star in this prison movie that casts a reform-minded eye on the brutalizing effects of life in the slammer. James Cagney “hits a white-hot peak as [Ross,] the embittered, stir-crazy fall guy” (Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide). And George Raft (Cagney’s friend since their vaudeville days) portrays racketeer Hood Stacey, who may hold the key to springing Ross.

Apparently, Ragtime (1981) will be coming out from Paramount soon as part of the Paramount Presents line.
