Default Just got a PS3...

Hey guys, I just bought me a BC 80GB PS3 with MGS4, Madden 09, GT5P, and sh*tload of blu-rays!!! I'm pretty excited

I have 1 important question however, when I connect to the internet, it is extremely slow. This is due to my internet router being in my basement (3 floors down).

What do I need to buy to have a stronger signal in my room? I'm guessing a link router of some sort that all you have to do is plug into the wall outlet to have the wireless signal "bounce" off of it into my PS3 ??

Any advise will be helpful, Thanks!!!

Drill a hole on the floor to have an Ethernet cord go down to the basement. I like wired the best.

if that doesnt work for you, theres always a range extender you can purchase, you just have to find out whats compatable to your router

Working for a cable company here in Fla, I gotta ask you this man. Hows the connection when plugged into a PC/Laptop or any other capable electronic? Running a direct line will work, however you would need a 36' ethernet cord to insure it would go from modem to the PS3. An extender would be the more practical solution, just put it on the secound floor and you should be ready to rock and roll man!

When the ethernet cord is plugged in directly to my PC it's lightening fast, when I use the wireless option on my PC (located next to my PS3) it's kind of slow.

I'll definitely try the extender and let you guys know

Part of the problem is going to be the wireless network that you're using.

The PS3 itself is going to be limited to g wireless, it'll constrain your broadband speeds down to the g wireless network speeds. Which can be noticable .

Also, your wireless router may just be a b router, which would constrain your speed even further.

If ya can share the model of the router, can prolly give ya more effective advice/expectations . There are repeaters available though as others said, if your network is being limited by distance [and going through floors tends to seriously reduce the effective range of wireless routers].

cut an aluminum can in half and kind of flair the sides out a bit. put it directly behind your wireless router's antenna (seriiously, like almost up against it) and point the can towards where your PS3 is.

I think the problem is the fact that the router is 3 floors below my PS3.

The router I'm using is the Westell VersaLink 327W gateway router supplied by Verizon through the FIOS service. I'm gonna have to check the rest of the info when I get home.

Unless he has an OC-3 or something then the wireless G speeds that are used by his router and PS3 are going to be sufficient. Most people have anywhere between 768Kbps and 20Mbps connections, and wireless G is 54Mbps. Even a wireless B router would likely be fine, as it is 10Mbps.

My guess, the signal isn't going to go through 3 floors. The extender may work, but you might need 2 of them. A 50' CAT5 cable can be had for cheap and likely easiest solution (if you don't mind having to run it through the floor).

What signal strength does the PS3 show?

Also, I think there are some threads here describing how the router/PS3 should be setup to improve the speeds but I've never gotten around to trying it. My signal strength is great on one and marginal on another but they have always seemed a little slower than I expected and that was true even when I had one of them using a wired connection. Anyway, that makes me think it's a settings issue but I haven't been bothered by it enough to try to resolve it yet.

DON'T DRILL ANY HOLES, or attempt to run a big ass cable before u can asses that the WiFi signal strength is the issue first.

if the signal strength IS the issue, there are many other ways to boost that up to your PS3.

I've been searching for those router setup threads but haven't found anything yet....

As of last night, the signal strength was between 47% and 59%, never went higher than 65% since I purchased the PS3. It seems like it takes days to download anything

I think I'm going to have to find a long enough ethernet cord. Oh well

What is the best extender worth buying?

I need to get better connection than 52% (the highest it ever went) to my PS3

Won't something like this work?

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1125238693680

Can you just plug this thing into the A/C outlet and I'll get better signal to my PS3??? Or would I still need to plug the actual ethernet cord to it, and then plug it into the wall to get the reception???

Please help!!!

hm...some routers are just worse at wireless than others. perhaps consider buying a new router?

The Linksys WRT54GL is the most popular one under 100$, it's a Wireless G router, and is Linux based, so you can install 3rd party firmwares.

My router is in the basement, and 2 floors up the signal on the laptop is still full green bars. Personally I really wouldn't like running a 50 foot cable through 3 floors (like in your case), so I wouldn't suggest wired. Heck, if you wanted wired internet, you would've gotten an Xbox
