Brilliantly played by Gene Wilder. Johnny Depp can't hold a buttercup to his performance.

I would like to see this end up on blu-ray. I think the Johnny Depp version is god-awful. This is one of my favorite childhood movies and i think it would look fantastic on blu-ray.

I agree! I'm not that old (21) and I love this movie! I still can't believe that utter POS movie with Johnny Depp was made. I absolutely hate the new Willy Wonka. In fact, I can honestly say it's one of the worst movies EVER for me. . The older film is sooooooo much better.

Any news on when we'll be seeing the Blu? I'm watching it on abc family HD right now and it looks great. Great movie too.

they're both great to me. But I clearly remember going to see the Depp version with my ex (*****....) and we both walked out of the theater agreeing (one of the few times in 3 years, I might add) that the 1971 version was definitely superior.

Ugh, I checked Amazon to see if the blu-ray version was at least up. All I found was this!

and yet oddly the Dahl never cared for the 1971 film version, whereas the okayed the remake (which was closer to the original book storywise)

Yeah, that's been there. I considered getting the HD DVD connection for my XBOX 360 for this a few other HD DVD titles.

Hopefully, we'll get another encode rather than what's on the HD-DVD version.

You're not alone. I love them both and would like both on blu.
In the Depp version, I always laugh till it hurts when the factory intro show catches fire. OMG. So funny.

Johnny Depp is wonderful with Burton but that Willy Wonka was lousy, too identical to the Gene Wilder one. I know I cant expect changes, but I wouldnt see something twice.

Similar? No way.
The Depp version had the whole Wonka father and son back story. Squirrels instead of geese, no bubbles, different songs, different oompa-loompas, different dialogue...the list goes on. I think they are very different.
