Dell wont play Wanted or Dark Knight, help please.

Hello,

I have a Dell XPS 420 with a bluray drive. It play all other blurays fine but when I put in Wanted or Dark Knight, it stalls at the loading screen. In the case of the DK disk, it plays the intro, the PG-13 screen and then gets stuck at the spinning CD screen. After a while, the player no longer recognizes the disk in the drive and I have to restart my computer.

I am using PowerDVD8 Ultra. I have updated it but that does not change anything.

You could try to uninstall the video driver and download an older or newer version this works most of the time.

i have an ATI 3450 with an older driver, TDK played back with no
problems at all, i then and updated the driver to a newer one and
the dark Knight blue screened Vista using PowerDVD 7.
went back to the older driver and works great, no more problems for now

I tried the video card driver thing, didnt help.

I called Dell and they said it is not my blu ray drive and is most likely a software problem. They said thier advanced software dept would help me out but is not covered under my warranty as powerdvd is a 3rd party software. I have to pay $239 to subscribe to their software support. I can buy a new blu ray player for that amount.

any other suggestions?

+1. I had WinDVD 9 and I had the same problem you have, only with the Prince Caspian BD. Bought TMT and it works perfectly now.

671Hawk, I feel your pain. I have the exact same problem with Dark Knight. I get through FBI warning, WB intro, and PG rating and then see a spinning disc. Eventually, my computer disconnects the blu-ray drive after closing PowerDVD. I have to shut down the computer to get it to connect again. BTW, I am using PowerDVD Ultra 8.

I did download ARCsoft Total Media's free trial, but it did the EXACT same thing which leads me to believe that it's not PowerDVD. I am able to play The Rock blu-ray just fine. The only difference I see with The Rock is that it doesn't have the BD-LIVE feature. I've tried disconnecting my computer from the internet and disabling the internet download setting in PowerDVD, but still get the freezing of the Dark Knight blu-ray.

Someone please help! Dell has spent about 10 hours trying to figure this out and they had me reinstall Vista and update the graphics card driver, and replaced the blu-ray drive with a new one. They eventually told me to call their premium on-call support which costs money. What a ripoff!

So I believe I fixed my problem in a non-optimal way. I downloaded the AnyDVD HD free trial software. It removes AACS encryption and that worked like a charm. Downside is that it is only a trial for 21 days. I hope i can uninstall and reinstall it. If not I may just have to shell out the 75$ to purchase the software permanently.

All my movies play fine now for some reason. Can anyone explain the reasoning behind this? Id like to know just to better understand blu-ray technology.
