Default Hollywood Blockbuster Blowouts

We’ve all seen them, those films that studios had high hopes for, that ended up doing more harm than good. Some were big were box office failures, others pushed studios to the brink of bankruptcy due to huge cost over runs or the personal lives of the cast. Even so, many of us still stand behind these films for reasons of our own. Pick the ones you wouldn’t mind owning on blu-ray and let us know why, in Heaven’s name, you would ever want to watch that movie more than once!

From that list I've only seen Howard the Duck, Showgirls and Speed Racer. Howard the Duck was truly terrible (apart from that one scene with Lea Thompson in her underwear ), Showgirls is actually quite watchable if you look at it as a parody of Hollywood, as Eszterhas and Verhoeven intended it. That doesn't make it a good film, since a main character that overacts horribly during the entire movie, doesn't really help. But it makes a little bit more sense.
Speed Racer is a movie I already own on Blu-ray, and genuinely like. I don't know why people hate it. It's a cartoon come to life, but in a better way than The Flintstones, or Popeye.

That's the whole point. Many of these films aren't bad at all. It's just that critics and audiences had preconceived notions that these films were going to disappoint, and the studios paid the price. I was careful not to call any of these "box-office failures" because many ultimately made a profit, but they still carry the stigma of a “bad movie”. Of course, some of these are pretty terrible and deserve to be called 'bad', but opinions differ as why.

Wikipedia has a nice list of Box-office bombs here.

I'm actually a fan of several movies on that list. The ultimate box-office disaster, Cutthroat Island, is by far and away my favorite pirate movie. I liked that short period where they tried to make Geena Davis an action star. You can't go wrong with Frank Langella as your villain. I also appreciate the old-school special effects
[Show spoiler](the ship explosion at the end is incredible)
.

Others that I like:
The Alamo (2004)
Heaven's Gate.
Green Lantern
Supernova (2000)
The Postman/Waterworld/Wyatt Earp/3000 Miles to Graceland
Land of the Lost
Black Cauldron
Legend
The Phantom (1996)
Mary Reilly
Titan A.E.
Strange Days
Gods & Generals
Showgirls
Nothing but Trouble
White Squall
The Majestic/Man on the Moon
Sorcerer (1977)
The Relic
Looney Toons: Back in Action

Speed Racer. Because of Matthew Fox and the
[Show spoiler]whole transformation of Rex becoming Racer X
. Only thing that saved the movie for me out of the horrible two hours that I spent watching it.

I went with 1941. John Belushi as a crazy pilot. The guy with the dummy on top of the ferris wheel. And Slim Pickens. What more do you need??

I Know Who Killed Me. Despite it being the flop that made Lindsey Lohan say I Know What Killed My Career, I love this movie. The faux stripping, the Is she or isn't she Aubrey, and the fact of a seriously sick and sadistic killer makes for a good movie. Think people were just jumping on the anti-Lohan bandwagon at the time and overlooked this movie. Plus opening the same week as The Simpson's Movie didn't help it's chances of finding its audience.
