Default Pioneer VSX-0411

so I was digging around the house today, and I found an old surround sound receiver.

my question is could I use this as a cheap dolby 5.1 system? I'm too cheap to buy a new receiver and speakers, being as I'm a college student and all.

And a quick answer to your question would be yes you can use it as a decent 5.1 surround DD and DTS reciever. What school do you go to. I'm in college to, don't be fooled by my gear, I have no weekend life and I work...a lot!

Ok. So I just quickly glanced at it and it's similar to my old Kenwood HTiB reciever I've had since 2002. One thing to note, don't drive any speakers you get to pair with this reciever to clipping levels. You'll damage your speakers. It has 100watts in stereo, that's a 100watts for just the L/R. I'm guessing this thing won't produce 30watts a channel in 5.1 surround.

Does it have a pre-out for a sub?

Either way, it should be good for dorm life and casaul movie listening?? Not sure if you live in one, but it would sound a lot better than some kids and their "badass" logitech computer speakers they have.

But don't expect to be able to power speakers to reference level sound (db level movies/music is recorded and listened at in studios) without running into mechanical problems and clipping/distortion.

Good find in your house though

Better than no college at all. We all come from different lives man. All the respect man. There are some kids on here who love their basement and have a seperate room with projection screens and all the nice High End Audio gear imaginable. There also the ones who say college and age don't make a difference. I say they do.

I live with my parents. I was just over at a friends house, and his dad had the 5.1 setup, and I'm like, "why don't I have this?" :P

Yeah, I think my Dad bought it like 5-10 years ago. He never used it.

I need to find out if I can fix the power cord, or it'll go out in the trash.

Whoa before you throw it out. It still has some value to it. It's not like this thing is pro-logic Dolby from the early 90s. Call up a local electronic repair shop. Shouldn't cost more than around $20 to fix a power cord.

Um...Polk Audio RM6750 with a polk PSW10 Sub

That's what I would suggest. It runs around $400 total. I know it could be out of your range, but its a decent suggestion for the price.
