Not a fan of the first version so I hope we get single releases. Scorsese's is still listed http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004WDZR3Q
Not sure why I appreciate Scorsese's more. Seen it at a cinema preview (was a bit of a failure on home video in the UK) and it had a big effect on me and was a great experience. Oddly, when I rewatched the 1962 version I thought even less of it. Maybe it was more shocking in its time. I was reminded of Scorsese's again when watching Shutter Island oddly. |

The original would do very nicely for me. Very heavily censored in the UK until the 1990s, its Mitchum's film all the way, even paired with an actor as good as Peck. He has a sleazy menace that's far more threatening than DeNiro who just goes so far over the top its silly. DeNiro has Dangerous Nutjob (literally) written all over him and by the end he's harder to kill than the Terminator, I also cannot stand Juliette Lewis though Nick Nolte is very good.
