Default The Official Onkyo PR-SC5507P pre-pro thread!

Howdy, with my mind finally made up I have decided to go with this pre-pro for my HT system. I had lots of research time and I am happy with my choice thus far. I just ordered one of these bad-boys Monday this week and it will be at my place this Friday according to UPS tracking.

I thought I would open up this thread for folks who might be interested in learning a bit more about this unit as I see one doesn't exist. I will keep you all updated on my personal adventure with the unit and give a full review on it. I will also update my gallery in about a week or so to reflect all of this as well.

I do open the floor to others with both your good and bad. I only ask that we all try to be civil and respectful of others and remember that everyone's opinion counts in this thread. So while here please remember to play nice with the other kids!

Oh yeah, the other thing I want to say is I didn't create this to be a "us against them" thread. I am hoping this will give users who either own the unit or others who are curious about the unit a place to gather together and exchange ideas and thoughts. A place to go to get help & "how to's" about the gear. Also to find out problems we might all be having and help to deal with the maker to resolve them should they arise, and I'm sure they will! Please post your pictures and tell your stories and lets have fun and if we are not too careful, maybe even learn something while we are at it!

Just curious, but is this the equivalent of the Integra DHC 80.1? Congrats on the new purchase and let us know how you like it once it comes in!

You are correct. It is the Onkyo branded equal of the 80.1 with some very minor changes. I will keep everyone posted as of the time I receive it. Delivery is still a go for this Friday.

here is a link to the unit's homepage:

http://www.onkyopro.com/model.cfm?m=...eamplifier&p=i

This is the official homepage and tech literature on this unit for all interested.

Howdy, just wanted to throw an update in here. I purchased a couple of goodies for my new baby. I got a Sirius Satellite radio multipin adapter kit SCHDOC1 Connect Home Dock. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0018BQFWW It will connect to the special multipin connector on the back marked Sirius. I'll be able to take my radio from the car, dock it and listen to all my sirius radio channels.

I also picked up a dock for my iphone Onkyo UP-A1 Dock http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-UP-A1-Do...7658346&sr=1-1 (my friend has this dock for his Onkyo receiver and loves it) and get music or video from it via the multipin connector on the back marked Universal; this port will not only give me video & audio, it will also charge the iphone while docked and give me control over it via the Onkyo remote (of course i'll put all of this in my harmony one remote!) with the universal dock I can also connect a HD radio tuner to get HD radio stations.

I'm getting closer to Friday. I've got all new cables for my processor. I went with all XLR from monoprice. they are a very nice build and a hefty #16awg conductors used. I got XLR to XLR for my XPA-5 & I also got some XLR to RCA for my UPA-2. I also picked up XLR-male to RCA male for my Oppo player. I want to use the dedicated 2 channel stereo out from there to the 2 channel XLR input on the 5507 for my stereo SACD's, DVD-A's & for CD's that are done in stereo. the unit supports DSD both over 2 or multichannel analog as well as over HDMI just like my 805 so my SACD collection and their sound quality will be maintained, I'm glad I won't be giving that feature up as it would have bothered me to no end. I will use HDMI for multichannel music on all available formats that support it.

The unit has multiple, assignable triggers and i plan on setting up the UPA-2 to only come on for devices that support 7.1. the XPA-5 will always come on taking care of the 2-channel stereo and 5 channel audio duties. we'll see how that all works out over the weekend!

since i am very familiar with the OSD and setup of the 805 that i currently own, the 5507 should not be difficult to set up at all since Onkyo uses an almost identical OSD for both units. there are of course feature sets that are not on the 805 that will be on the 5507.

I think for right now, that's all that I've got. at least till I think of something else that I just have to put up here!

Default 5507 was just delivered!

Howdy, I just took delivery of the unit from the UPS driver. I am sofa king happy! the box shows no visible signs of damage and is in perfect condition (which is always a good thing) so I'm happy about that. I'm also happy I got an early delivery and didn't have to wait to be "last on the route list" so that's good.

I also want to take a moment to thank the good folks at GGvideo whom I purchased this unit from. they worked tirelessly with me, answered all my emails and i did send a lot of them. they even emailed me during the big snow storm that NY had this past weekend. they got me a unit shipped directly (drop shipped) from their main distribution hub in CA. So far my experience with them has been stellar and nothing short of it. They made good on all of their promises and made a believer out of me given that this is the first time I have ever dealt with them. I know that they are on the top of my list for my "pro level" gear from now on. I highly recommend them to any and everyone. Please go to their site, look it over and check out their stuff! They will take good care of you. they are actually called G & G Technologies despite the fact that the website is ggvideo. here ya go: http://www.ggvideo.com/home.php

Well, i'm gonna take a couple of pictures of this baby and over the course of setting it up and everything and re-do my gallery and give a review as i mentioned in earlier post.

later...

Default first photos!

ok, i'm starting the photo teaser portion of the show!

the above shot is of the box that the unit is in. it was backed with the "box in box" style packaging and the is the inner box that actually houses the unit, nice!

this is the first shot of the actual protective packing of the unit, remote, manual, etc.

there will be more pictures posted later today after i finally remove the 5507 from the box and it's protective sleeve.

thus far, it is well packed and protected from damage (always good) so far so good as I am very happy!

later...

With your new unit having just arrived today, I don't expect this to get answered for a little while, as I'm sure you're having all kinds of fun with the 5507.

Is there a reason you went with the pro version instead of the 'regular' model? I know you don't have a rack and unless I missed a post somewhere, I didn't think you were planning on getting one. Other than the rack mounts, does the 5507P offer anything beyond what the 5507 does?

Anyway, I'm looking forward to your review of the 5507P. If you wouldn't mind, how much did you pay for the unit? Feel free to PM me the cost if you want.

Justin

there is no 5507 other than the one i purchased which is the PR-SC5507; perhaps you are thinking of say the 5007. I could find a model 5507 in other than the pro version which doesn't mean what your saying isn't true.

as far as the rack mounting, that is an option that it comes with. the rack mounting gear is in a seperate box and can be used as an add-on, not a requirement. and you are correct, i don't have a rack nor do i intend to get one (you know what happens when we say stuff like that ) I went with this pre-pro because for me it offered the best value of technology for the money in what i wanted. it gives me the options for wide or height channels should i choose to go that route, it gives me the option for XLR connections for innerconnects (which I am going to use) it is a big step up in the direction i want to go. it has network capabilities, USB & DLNA features too. specialized ports for both my sirius radio & my iphone 3G that will take full advantage of those devices, multiple zones multiple HDMI inputs (one in the front) dual HDMI outputs, dual, individually calibrated sub-outs for that .2 action! multiple programable 12v triggers, stereo XLR input, multichannel analog inputs, it supports DSD for my SACD'S (would not give that up) it fits in the exact same foot print as my current (soon to be moved) Onkyo 805 (the best receiver they made in many years, imo, oh yes, soon to go on the selling block) and it has an OSD very similar to the 805 so the learning curve is almost 0 for me since i'm so familiar with the 805 and I have not had problems with my 805 so I stayed in the Onkyo family. I also wanted to go full seperates. now i have a geat pre-amp to match my two great amps and take my gear to it's realized potential. I hope that helped.

i'll pm you the info you requested.

You are correct. For some reason I had thought there were two different versions of the 5507. I had thought that the pro version came with the rack mount permanently installed and not as an option.

Sounds like the 5507 will fit all your need for some time to come. When the time comes to upgrade my 605, I'd like to jump into separates. I had thought about the UMC-1, but I really want DSD support. Plus, I like the look of a larger receiver/pre-pro and I enjoy Onkyo's sound.

Had a chance to do any listening yet?

Justin

Aw man, thats a nice piece of gear you got there my friend! I have been thinking about a new avr that will trigger my amp(s) in 7 channel mode. After seeing your Onkyo 5507, I am thinking twice about another avr. The 9 channels are sweet, but if I were to go that route, I would probably lean toward the 7 channel model. I notice that it has balanced connections only. I take it that they are superior to unbalanced? The upgrade bug is kickin' arse around here boys. SD, I do believe that I saw another forum member with an Onkyo pre amp. I can't remember him right off, but I saw it somewhere. Well my friend, we will be waiting on your full review and pics. Once again, CONGRATS!
