Default New to blu ray need help

so i just bought my first blu ray player today...i also bought an hdmi cable to hook it up to my tv...well, since i have a first generation hdtv that i bought about 6 years ago or so, it dosen't have an hdmi input...so i had to use component cables to run my blu ray player...everything works fine and the picture quality is great and way better than my dvd but my question is, am i getting true high definition using the component cables? any info is much appreciated

you are getting hd picture but only up to 1080i... if you want full hd from a blu-ray disc you need to run hdmi or dvi cables

Before the 1080p snobs who start spouting how you aren't seeing true HD unless you have a 1080p TV chime-in, let me. You've made a huge upgrade from 480p DVD to 1080i/720p blu-ray. Yes, you are getting high-definition. It is the best that your current set can handle. HDMI really wouldn't give you any better of a picture with your current setup. You should return the HDMI cable to wherever you bought it, especially if you paid for an overpriced Monster cable.

Welcome, and enjoy the world of blu-ray. Eventually you will want to upgrade to a 1080p set, and the picture should be an improvement over your current set (moreso due to the overall technology improvements in the last 6 years than the increased resolution, but the increased resolution will be noticeable). When you do upgrade, be sure to visit Monoprice.com for all of your cable needs (and stay away from Monster).

No you're unfortunately not getting the most out of it which is in that HDMI hookup. Welcome to Blu though!

It's possible your TV has a DVI (basically HDMI without the audio). That's all mine has. Not sure if it is better than component, but you can get a cheap HDMI to DVI cable from blue jeans.

Folks, he has a 6 year-old non-widescreen HDTV with no HDMI. It is NOT 1080p, so he is getting the best picture possible from his current setup with component cables.
