Default Really.. Really.. Weird.

Okay, so my PS3 breaks down, hardware failure. I send it in for repair, and get back a refurb... I have a 22" Vizio 720p TV. I connect my PS3 to my TV through the HDMI cable and it detects optimal video settings, it says maximum resolution 1080p, and I go... "what?" because my tv can only do up to 1080i. So I hit the "Guide" button on my TV's remote which shows a little box on the screen that says which output your currently viewing and the resolution it is playing at, to my surprise it says HDMI 2 1080p!! What in the world? How?

Because your TV accepts a 1080p signal. Its not actually displaying 1080p. the info on the TV will usually display the signal being feed into it. If your TV is 720p it will only display 720p. feeding a 1080p signal into it, will only downscale the resolution down to 768p

How can a 720P TV even handle 1080i, let alone 1080P? Maybe it decects that there is a 1080P signal, but only displays it as 720P.

If your talking about PS3 then it would not matter

If your talking about TV, it still would not matter because vizio doesn't sell a 22" tv that can play 1080p, and my old ps3 would only play up to 1080i anyways.

And back when I had my old PS3 it would not even display 1080p on the screen. when it tried to, the screen would go black.

your TV does not physically have the pixels to display 1080p. your TV only has 768 pixels. Its just accepting the source signal

Funny my tv does the same thing, but it actually does run in 1080p which was not very expected but greatly appreciated..

I discovered it by comparing the 720p output and 1080p output...

what im saying though back with my old ps3, the screen would go black instead of doing any downscaling when my ps3 tried to test 1080p on my tv.

My vizio and my sisters vizio both will accept 1080p inputs even though the specs for the TVs (26" and 37") say it only handles up to 1080i input.

But again the 720p models will only display in the native resolution of 720p.

Is it possible you had your old PS3 set to force 24HZ on? The 720P model Vizio's don't like that and you will get the black screen. 24HZ only works in 1080 mode (i believe if i rememebr what i have read in the past), so if you were using 720p then it would have not been forced on.

Not 100% sure if 24Hz works with 1080i or not, or if you were using that mode.

my 720p Sony KDL-S3000 is the exact same. I tried 1080p from my PS3 one day when my 60" was dead (damn bulb) and it worked. Screen said "1080p" when I hit the display button. I know it was just down-scaling it to 720p though.

Its the same thing with 1080i. Accepts it, but scales it down to 720p.

I actually tested this, and got different results, If I take 720p trailer and play it, and set it to normal size the video takes only a small portion of the screen, if I set it to 720p it takes up full screen under normal.

< - - < I read up later that 1080p was a supported resolution in the instruction manual.
