I admit ive been one of those people who have come on here moaning about the black bars when i first started using the website.I've learnt that wider ratios are better as they show more information, are more detailed and everything dosent look as close to the camera.I think the people who don't like them probably have small sets.Ive even been one of those people who have even distorted the image with using different tv ratio settings but with the help of people in here ive educated myself to know watching a movie in its original ratio with pixel by pixel setting is the only way you should watch it.I now enjoy watching them with the black bars.I would say though to get that real big screen feel with a 2.40:1 movie youd need at least a 52" my 46" feels a bit small with a 2.40:1 movie.
p.s to hollywood please dont go more than 2.40:1 though i'll need a 65" |

hey there 'doo....glad you're adjusting well.
Wanted to mention, I have a 65" and I too love the 2.40 films. Seriously makes them feel more like FILMS....not just movies. Do you ever get the sense that the outer edges are taller than the middle of the picture? Mine, ever so often (and maybe after a few drinks) tends to look like a curved screen! ...maybe I shouldn't be chewing on the window molding above 3-feet?? ![]() |

This is one thing I always hated explaining to people when I worked @ best buy and dvd’s just came out.
I used to keep a copy of ghostbusters on hand and when someone would complain about the black bars I’d throw it in, go to a specific scene (can’t remember which one) and show them the widescreen on one tv and the pan & scan on another and they could actually see the widescreen giving them more picture. My brother in law still complains about them though!! ![]() |

Original Aspect Ratio and the black bars that come with it are indeed something that someone has to learn to like. Without understanding that the bars allow for more picture, not less, you certainly wouldn't like it.
The most important thing is that you opened yourself to that learning experience ![]() ![]() |

I have a good friend I have been working on for years. He would rather give up more picture to have full screen with no black bars. I told him he is losing picture and in some cases up to 50% with Jaws for example. He said the stuff he was not seeing was not important. I have given up on this lost cause....

They never bothered me and I have always gotten widescreen. Funny thing about the widescreen that gets me is, when a movie such as 'Batman' and 'Transformers 2' will jump from the widescreen to a full IMAX for a short few scenes. When that happens, I do enjoy the full screen, but then get a little bothered when it goes back to the blackbars.
Since I am able to block out the blackbars, they go and pull a full screen on me to make it harder to block out the bars, because just a moment ago, I had seen a full screen. |

The bars don't bother me at all. Once you see the difference, it's almost impssible to go back.
I still remember during the early days of DVD when you had an option to buy full-screen or wide-screen versions and how my brother interupted a movie, (one of the Mummy's) saying something was wrong, only find out his wife bought the full-screen version. ![]() |

What I always used to tell people was in some economic terms like would you pay for four new tires for your car but be happy when the company only put three on your car. That's what you are doing when you pay full price and then watch a full screen movie, you're throwing away a minimum of 25% of your investment. People still don't seem to get it though.

the black bars blow chunks !!! always hated em !!! you guys can make excusses to like them. i'm not buyin it. the only reason i went projector was to get a larger pic than my 65" dlp could give me. the black bars cause 25%ish of your screen to NOT be used.
i don't have to worry about that now. i shift the image down to the bottom of the screen, and mask the top ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I have no problem with the black bars, but some people do. As long as I can view in OAR (or close to it) I am happy.
It's not a matter of right or wrong, what matters is what a person likes. (IMO) As long as person is happy let them watch anyway they like it. |

I wish I had a bigger tv though. I'm very surprised about someone saying he was still bothered about them on a 65" I think once I got to 55" then a 2:40.1 movie would look big enough for me if I got close to the screen.Even when I was complaining about them I already knew pan and scan was horrible as it's not just cutting information it's cutting picture quality too with zooming

What do you mean, "it's own masking"? That's what the black bars are.
