One area I am glad to see growth in is the number of experimental/avant garde films being released on blu. I realize those are broad terms but I am happy to see less conventional films like Zidane, Chronos and Baraka out there along with region free collections of work by Jeff Keen and Kenneth Anger from BFI. Of course next month we will be treated to a slew of Stan Brakhage films on bd courtesy of Criterion.
Would love to see some Maya Derren, Harry Smith, Len Lye, early Bunuel, Man Ray, etc. Anyone know of anything in the works? Some titles that are already out there worth noting? |

Good evening,
I would like to recommend: 1. Amelia - a wonderful and truly unique experimental film. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Ameli...y-Review/4758/ 2. Lou Reed's Berlin - also a terrific concept project. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Lou-R...y-Review/1658/ 3. Anti-Clock - since you already mentioned BFI, I assume you are familiar with it. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Anti-...y-Review/5379/ 4. Tokyo! - a fantastic project, with a short by a director I consider to be one of the greatest of our time, Leos Carax. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Tokyo...y-Review/4253/ Pro-B |

Ummm...how "experimental" do they need to be? I would consider "A Clockwork Orange" experimental even though it's very popular and from a well-known artist. And if we're going to include Kubrick, we have to include Lynch whose Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire is coming out soon and just came out in other countries respectively--a good sign they might be headed stateside. And then we should have the "Lynch of anime," Satoshi Kon's Paprika added to the mix. And another you may not have heard of Delicatessen from the same director as the aforementioned Amelia (though not quite as good).

You're right, I meant Amelie.
More embarrassing however is the fact that I forgot to include Charlie Kaufman's bizarre Synecdoche, New York; Ebert named it the best film of the decade. |
