I thought I'd just get some insight on how people feel cylinder subs perform. I think aesthetically they are more pleasing than a box, but word on the street is that they perform nearly identical to each other.
Anyone have real world experience with these? Do they widen the sweet spot somehow? Lower frequencies? Anything? Cylinder subs don't get a lot of thread time, so maybe this thread can enlighten those that are interested. |

I expect MacDaddyOJack to chime in here. I am sure his sub performs very well, and besides that the look is very unique and just freakin' awesome!

In 1998, I bought two fat and short cylinder passive subwoofers (walnut top) from Hsu Research. They were Hsu Research's top-of-the-line subwoofers and were highly rated by all the magazines. They were not cheap. I paid a total of $1,543.50 (in 1998 dollars). There are beautiful and perform well. Recently, I replaced the drivers on both of them. I would not replace them with any box subwoofers. Our guests believe they are coffee tables.
![]() Technical Specifications Frequency Response: 20Hz - 500Hz Power Handling: 500watts RMS Nominal Impedance: 4 Ohms Sensitivity: 93db @ 1m. 2.83V Finish: Seamless black knit cloth over cylinder, choice of three top finishes Size : 23 inches in diameter, 22 inches in height Weight: 65 lbs. Feet: Three black anodized aluminum spiked feet. A subwoofer's performance depends on many factors, including the cabinet, size, driver, ports, tuning, and amplifier. In addition, placement in a room plays an important role. You can't generalize whether a cylinder type is better or not. |

I do like those wood capped subs Big Daddy!
I've done a little more research, and it seems that SVS is extremely popular for cylinder subs. Can anyone point me to another company to compare/contrast? Also, I'm just about done planning my upgraded system pieces, and will more than likely pull the trigger sometime this year on all the parts. The sub is one of those parts that I'm unsure of. I want the sub to get low and if it is musically oriented it gets bonus points - if not, the set of towers I have in mind should be able to cover the lows well enough. Anyways, I pulled this from the AVS forums. ![]() ![]() ![]() Brown note? Anyone have any suggestions for $800 and down? |
