Default HELP! Onkyo 606 or Sony 920

Guys, I need help in choosing from either 606 or 920. I'm leaning towards 606 for it's bi-ampable and for the 920 I can't find anywher that it can. Your comments, suggestions on these 2 receivers are greatly appreciated.

Do yourself a favor and go with the Onkyo. I've always had problems with lower priced Sony Receivers. Their only good recievers IMHO is the top of the line ones. I own the TX-SR606 in another room and it sounds great.

Second that argument. My friends parents have the 920, and it runs out of gas real quick. You get a lot more distortion and signal noise in the higher db range than the Onkyo.

I love my 920! Great sound and outstanding features. If you are set on bi-amping, the 920 isn't capable. I would look into the Pioneer VSX-1018AH if I were you though....

It really is all about feature set in this price range. I would suggest you take the Sony home and hook it up to your system and see how fast it "runs out of gas". I recommend the Pioneer because of preouts, bi-amping, and 3 HDMI inputs.

FYI on the Sony STR-DG820 (step down from the 920) vs. Onkyo.

While it’s initially perhaps a touch leaner than the Onkyos, the greater insight is noticeable, as are improved dynamics.Listen to a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, as provided by Mamma Mia!, and the music has rhythm, timing and punch, with the Sony’s speed and agility really coming into its own, while bass notes are both deft and tight.

I have seen no other reviews for these Sonys, people always want to pull up past reviews. If anyone has anything current besides this, facts are always appreciated.

Fellow lover of the monitor line. The thing is, they have polks too. But it's strange, I don't know which model they are. They sport the new/old metal emblem instead of the read one like on the Monitors and old RTi, but they're older than the Monitors. I'm guessing something similar to the RM models. Oh well. I guess other factors come into play, like the both L/R and center are in a entertainment system designed to conceal the speakers. Who knows.

For the OP: If that pioneer looks good, I'd wait for the new models to roll out this April

And the "bi-amp" feature on the Onkyo I have brought my towers to life! It really opened up seperation between the highs, mids, and lows. It opened up in sound detail a lot. Seemed less muddy, and the highs were definately clearer. It didn't seem like the highs were skimped out on anymore and brought the sharpness and clearness you hear in the CS2/CS1 center.

The best suggestion is to try and audition all of them and see what sounds best and has the best feature set. That is the only way you will find exactly what you want.

Have you looked at the Yamaha 663.

That would be my suggestion since it has pre-outs. Then later on you can get an Emotiva 7 channel amp that would really bring your speakers to life.

Haha...if it doesn't bother the OP and it works out for him then that would def be a good AVR. If he needs more HDMI inputs/outputs, maybe a seperate HDMI switcher could work for him

I had the 605 and now have the 920 and the 920 kills it. The range of sound that comes from my speakers is a lot wider. I hear a lot more than I did before. I don't know if the same runs true on the 606, but this is my experience.

When I was searching for a reciever I looked at all 4 that were mentioned, My favorite was the Pioneer 1018, the only problem I had was its size and the space I had. If could go back, I prolly would have get it now only cause now I want a Pre outs and the Sony doesn't have them.

My next was the Sony 920, While I doubt you will find it anywhere, it was great sounding and very good power. They are supposed to be coming out with a 950?? I think its called.... I am completely happy with the sound and power, and for the most part functionality, just wish it had pre-outs...

the Yammy was next, I really enjoyed its sound but at best buy it seemed to top out a little, and some of the reviews I read, it does have that problem... It also has pre outs, and the unit is about the same size as the Sony, once again, If I could go back, I would get it for the pre outs, personally I think in a midsize room or larger it would need an external amp. IMO

I listened to the onkyo 606 and I thought it was powerful, but compared to the other 3 it just seemed to not be as clear and precise, IMO. I didn't feel that it ran out of gas, I thought it had good power, but it was to edgy and rough for my taste. Its interesting that Audiophile brought up that the highs were brought out when he bi-amped the reciever, because that tells me what I heard was prolly correct, that it wasn't as clear and precise as the others... not sure I would have been happy with that... and if you have a 6.1 or 7.1 setup, now or in the future, you wont be able to bi-amp, and like the sony you won't be able to use an external amp with it.

I guess if I were you I would wait to see what comes out this year.... and then listen to them and see what you think and then purchase.

Good luck.

It gives you the option in the future to hook up an external amplifier for better amplification of the speakers. Might be a big deal to you, might not be if you only plan on using the receiver to power your speakers.

I dont understand why so many people dog Sony. I love my Sony equipment. It sounds just as good as many other higher priced systems. Im not going to mention brands but I have gotten compliments from friends who have far more expensive systems. Im not going to mention any brands becasue Im not trying to start trouble or watn anyone to jump down my throat.
