It really depends on what sounds best to you. Straight delivers the signal unaltered, but you may find that Adventure, Sci-Fi, or one of the other DSP modes works better with different movie types or sources.
I typically use mine in Straight mode, but every now and then I use Adventure or Sci-Fi. Most users are adamant that Straight mode is all you should use, but it's all up to your ears in your room. |

I use the Direct Mode on the Denon and it is the same thing... Unaltered. And I used the Auto Format Direct mode on my old Sony too. I prefer the sound just as it was recorded not modified by some algorithm. That said I often use one of the Cinema Modes for watching cable (now uverse) to bring a little more life into the stereo DD track that they use.
