Over the weekend, I popped in my Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle blu-ray and noticed a feature that I've never seen before on a blu-ray release. And it was hysterically funny!
On my blu-rays, you get to the main menu and it will play a reel that usually lasts 15-30 seconds of scenes from the movie. Harold and Kumar did something totally unique. The scene is a shot on them driving and facing you the viewer. Then they break the 4th wall and start asking me why I haven't picked a menu option yet. "It's not that hard, there are only 4 options." The reel kept going and after about a minute, Kumar says something like, " man this is starting to piss me off. Why are they still looking at us? Start the movie, already!" The reel went on for several minutes before finally repeating. I was really impressing and laughing my butt off at these two knuckleheads getting pissed off at the viewer. I would love to see more blu-rays put such a creative effort into the main menu screen. However, this extra apparently existed with the old dvd release, back in a time when studios wanted to create a unique dvd experience. Now with physical media sales dropping, I don't see them going much beyond the bare minimum with something like the menu screen. |
