Default White Glove Shipping for Plasmas

Hey guys,

What is the consensus on White Glove Shipping?

I am debating pullling the trigger on the Panny TH-46PZ85U from BuyDig.

$1149 total with standard shipping
extra $50 for white glove.

I have read around here and the other usual boards and seem to get mixed opinions. (who woulda thought?) But what gets me is some say they love it and other say its a total rip.

I live in an upstairs apartment, so it would be pretty convenient. I don't really care about the "unpackage and connect" but the "make sure it works" thing is kinda cool.

I also read that with white glove you also get a 4 hour window for delievery, which is a lot nicer than the "sometime today" you usually get with standard shipping.

I guess I am just looking for people's thoughts and anyone's stories about their White Glove experiences.

If the "white glove" service includes calibration...then I'd say go for it. Other than that it's just a waste of $50...(you could get 2-3 BD's with that).

John

PS: Isn't the whole install it yourself thing part of the excitement? I know it is for me.

I couldnt agree more. The putting it together myself is how I play with my toys, part of the enjoyment.

Oh absolutely, I wouldn't let him do anymore than stand there to make sure it powers up. I am just thinking for $50 it might be worth it to have him lug it up the 2 sets of stairs and bring it back down if its DOA.

Other than that he isnt touching a thing.

The Panny's are pretty reliable, so I wouldn't worry too much. However, if it gives you peace-of-mind do it. After all $50 isn't a stupendous amount of money.

It really depends on the people who deliver it, which is out of your hands. Some feel like they're doing you a favor by bringing it up.. when in reality it is their job and you paid for it. Make sure you read the fine print as some say they will only take it up 1 or 2 flights of stairs.

I couldn't agree more when i first got my PS3 and koed it up, (i know not a big deal there) but it was still my pride and joy still is to this day. I know that one thing I love doing. I'll be doing the same thing again tomorrow when I get off work. I have a brand new dell laptop coming to me that is souped up good. I can't wait to turn that baby on and start playin wiht it and exploring it and installing some games that I already have and are going to be getting it. I think for a treu feeling on your equipment it's important to do it your self so to speak. unless your a total moron to tech in some degree I think it's vital to the human brain and guiyz like us to do it our selves. girls have dolls. Boys have action figures. Women have purses, us guyz (BIG BOYS) have cars and tech. it basically boils down to that. IMO

"White Glove"...is merely marketing speak for inside delivery. This amounts to bringing it in, unpacking, placing on your stand, and plugging it in. I'd bet if you greet the delivery truck guys nicely, hand them a Coke and through ~$20 at them to bring it inside, they'd probably do it. But beware also that there could be company policy on NOT doing things like that, i.e., liability.

+1
These situations almost always depend on how serious the delivery people take their jobs. Some will do it and some will not. The problem is that you have no way of knowing who you will get in advance. I would probably skip the white glove delivery if it costs money.

And sadly you don't always need white glove.

The shipping I got was door drop for my Pioneer.

Guy showed up and said "Where you want it?"

He helped me bring it right in the house happy as can be.

Regular shipping is to your front door. White glove takes it in. Ididnt' want to pay extar for while glove shipping. So i had a dolly to bring it in myself. But the delivery guys choose to bring the TV into my apartment on the 2nd floor knowing it was too big fo rme to do myself. I did tip them 20 dollars which they did take. Not all companies may allow this, but it was cheaper than the white glove treatment.

My TV was 60 inch and after i uncrated it, i did have an issue that it was to large and weighed 75 pounds and i didn't have help putting it on my stand.

Being as impatient as I was and not wanting to wait for someone to help me I managed to grip the TV jsut right and lift it to the stand myself so i lucked out. This was a Sammy LED DLP TV so it wasn't as easy as if it had been a plasma or LCD.

Personalyl i woudl skip the white glove treatment and either rely on the delivery guys and tip them or have a buddy over when it is delivered.

White Glove was no special service for me. As in the fine print, if your tv requires to be put on a stand, the White Glove Service does not require the delivery people to set it up past this point. So they took the tv out of the box for me and just leaned it against the wall until i was able to call a friend to come help me...

Some companies do more for you, some do less. It really depends on the delivery person. I offered water + tip for the people who took mine in and set it up but they refused it.
