Default HD or BR...what did I see??

Sorry if I'm not following protocol. I have a Samsung HDTV with a small Philips HDMI dvd player. Rented the Stones "Shine a Light" from B.B. rentals. The image was amazing...much better than standard digital...I swear it was HD. Yesterday, went out and bought the dvd from B&N, popped it into the machine and ...what a let down???? I called the B&N manager, asking if they had a HD version. He said no but they have a blue ray one. B.B. said they only rent the standard version, no HD, QUESTION: Could a blu ray version play a HD version on my machine...was it just my imagination??? Could I have rented a HD version no longer being rented at B.B.??? I've tried to alter every setting I can on my TV and dvd recorder inorder to try and reproduce the original showing that I viewed...tell me I'm not crazy. Is there a HD version out there?

unfortunately.... I don't think I can help you there......

Your DVD player isn't going to play a Blu-ray.... so you watched, and then purchased, the exact same movie......

Did you watch it in the dark the first time, then in a room flooded with light the next time?

I've got no idea... sorry. Blu-ray players are getting cheaper though, and I can tell you this....... If you get "Shine-A-Light" on Blu-ray, you'll see and hear something even better than whatever it was you thought you heard/saw the first time you watched it

Blu-ray's (BDs) will only play in a BD player. If all you have is a DVD player then you did not see the HD version of the movie. On the other hand Philips does have BD players, and they do play DVDs. What model player do you have?

Is it possible his player was upconverting on his first viewing and some option didn't get set to upconvert on his replay? Of course knowing the player model would help resolve that issue as well.
