Hong Kong Tiger on Beat

Liu Chia-Liang's Tiger on Beat (1988) is set to be released on Blu-ray on April 21.

Synopsis:
Quote:
A seasoned cop and his rookie partner are a pair of mismatched partners in this Hong Kong action-comedy in the style of 'Lethal Weapon'. The wacky twosome are up in arms as they try to solve the murder of a heroin trafficker.

This movie is a classic. Chow Yun Fat in a kung/gun fu flick. Weirdest combo ever, but it works. Ti Lung's cameo was great too. I'm really loving the movies that are being released lately. Lets hope the quality of these blu rays get better.

preordered as well. funny how TOB leapt from FS's non-remastered collection straight to blu-ray.

Yeah, I wonder if they're using the materials HKL prepared? Contracts often allow for reversion of materials or transferring of them to the licensor when remastering is done. I just know it's going to be better than my old Universe disc. lol

It looks really really nice. I'm sure someone at AsianDVDGuide will go oh it's an upscale blah blah, but it sure as hell doesn't look like one to me. The picture looks great (clean), if a tad soft in some shots, but sharp in others. Here's a treat the subtitles are really well done (though the English dialogue doesn't always match the subs lol). It beats the pans off my old LBX Universe disc for sure!

I can try and take some pictures with my Samsung Captivate, but I'm not sure how good it will look. For a review there isn't much I can really add, but if I get a chance I'll see what I can come up with.

Its been nearly 2 weeks but I finally recieved this. Very impressed. PQ looks great! Definitely HD unlike other Fortune Star blu-rays. Traces of DNR visible but this is probly FS's best HD transfer yet!

Thanks for the pics and for the review!

That doesn't look very good to me, even if it's an HD source it has a lot of DNR applied to it so there isn't much detail to be had. I'll grab the HKL DVD instead because it looks like a good movie!

People tend to perpetuate the whole DNR thing, and they're not wrong but for me, its hardly a dealbreaker. Compared to previous DVD releases as well as other FS blu-rays, Id give this transfer a 3.5, maybe a 4.0 if Im feeling generous.

I have to agree. It does not look very highdef. It looks cleaner than most Fortune Star Blu-ray offerings, but that may be due to number of other reasons. If you want to see real Fortune Star highdef, Sex and Zen is your ticket.

how to judge a bluray a real highdef or not? people at different age might get different results.

I dont think its upscaled. perhaps the softness combined with the DNR make it look as such but it looks like genuine HD to me. maybe not Sex and Zen HD but HD nonetheless.

we disagree about the video but I think we can all agree that this movie kicks ass! the chainsaw duel is crazy as heck and the movie is worth watching for that scene alone! here's my user review.

On NTSC, probly the non-remastered Joy Sales DVD. PQ is pretty horrible but atleast its anamorphic. best DVD available is the HKL disc.

First of all it will be a bootleg, because it's a Cinema City/Golden Princess licence and therefore unavailable outside of Asia.
