I think they say if it is a relitivly new technology it is best to go for an extended warrenty but if it is speakers I would not touch it. This is because while speaker technology has advanced a lot they are basically made the same way they were 25 or 30 years ago.

I wouldn't normally as I feel it's just a money-grab. However, with the tough economic times we are in, more and more retailers are dealing. So you might end up with an extended warrenty for next to nothing. Ask away!

a lot of it depends on what it is...... like projectors need bulbs.... if you can get one that includes one free bulb replacement in 3-4 years.....then it pays for itself...... for an AVR etc... it's like buying a lottery ticket..... if it craps out often enough, and bad enough, it could equal a free upgrade later..... but usually the warranty you paid $100 for, is only protecting an out-dated piece of equipment that is worth less than that (by the time you need the warranty that is) I typically don't buy warranties, but try to get them thrown in for free.... usually with electronics, if it's gonna break, it's gonna be in the first few months, if not days....

If you regularly read Consumer Reports, they don't recommend extended warranties on electronics, except for projection displays. While CR is not a good resource for details like PQ, AQ and other topics of interest to the aficionado, I think they are highly reliable for evaluating reliability and durability.

In my 40 years of life, I have purchased a single extended warranty on a vehicle, at the recommendation of the first (not the best) wife. I have never used nor needed one. If I need an out of warranty repair next year, I will have more than paid for it by the savings in not having paid for extended warranties as a rule.

Companies that market products that need extended warranties get reputations for selling shoddy products, yes, no?

FYI - Latest CR discussion on repair rates and EWs relative to new FPDs. Bottom line: Not worth it for 'most' FPDs.

When I bought my Onkyo receiver, they offered a 3-year extended warranty for $40. That $40 is definitely worth the peace of mind that I won't have to buy a new receiver for at least 4 years.

And that is what it comes down to...PEACE OF MIND. If a warrenty gives you peace of mind....then buy one.

Really depends on how much and how well the warranty is... My brother toward the las 6 months of the warranty... Stuck the device in a trash bag till it overheated. Then they fixed, he did it again, they fixed it. Then he did it again, damnedest thing... They upgraded him to the new model.

Some people may not know but if you make purchases with your credit card - depending on you CC company they automatically extend the warranty by a year - my buddy mentioned it to me before I bought my TV so I called Mastercard(BMO Mosaic Mastercard) and they verified it and told me even If I dropped my TV carrying it out the door it wouldv'e been covered.

The only other times I've bought the extended warranty is from Visions and The Brick in Canada for one of my other TV's and my new receiver only because they give you an In-store credit for what you pay for your warranty if you don't call them during the warranty period - so it's just knowing that I'm covered just in case something goes wrong, and if not then I can get my self a new Blu-ray Player or something 4 years from now.

I've had great luck with extended warranties in the past few years, so I get one everytime.

I had a laptop go through 3 motherboards in 2 years, so BB ended up refunding me the purchase price, and I got a brand new model.

Just recently, my Samsung RP HDTV started yellowing in the corners. It had about 6 months left on the extended service contract. I called service, they came and looked at it and then talked to the warranty company. Warranty company called me last week, told me it was uneconomical to fix, and refunded me the purchase price. Then a bought a new Panny plasma.

I had my two systems installed in Aug.08 In Dec. my sales Rep called to offer and extended warranty. I declined. 2 weeks later Tweeters went out of business nationwide.

I am very glad I did not buy that one !!!!
