I know most people equate Sergio Leone with classic westerns like Once Upon a Time in the West & The Man with No Name trilogy. But I am really hoping Warner Bros could do more to honor Leone with Once Upon a Time in America which, I think, is the filmmaker's best work.
An incredible dvd set of the full version was released previously and I've been hanging on to it until the Blu-ray version is released. On the other side of the spectrum (with less subtlety) is Michael Cimino's Year of the Dragon. Though it was panned at the time of its release due to the film being accused as racist and misogynistic, I thought it was a great movie about a bigoted cop who goes beyond to go against the Chinese triad. Mickey Rourke as at his best in this film with John Lone playing the young, but ambitious snakehead. Hope to see these two great NY modern-crime epics be realized in Bluray one day. |

![]() ![]() ![]() I don't own Once Upon... in any format. I have Year of the Dragon on DVD. The first clearly shows that Leone can do just fine outside of a western. John Lone was recommended by Cimino to Bernardo Bertolucci for the role of Pu-Yi in The Last Emperor. I would welcome both films in Blu format to my library. Once Upon a Time in America ins my Fave film of all time! everything about it is so amazing and beautiful. I hate when people compare it to the Godfather...its nothing like the Godfather!!
It also has the best ever score! My hope is that it will be somewhat restored for Blu ray and not be on 2 disks. The DVD i have looks grubby in some scenes and the picture has some horrible extra grain in some scenes which im sure weren't there when it was premiered |
