Hey guys, I have my laptop connected to the internet via 3g wireless.
The 3g hooks into the usb port on my laptop and the carrier is Cellular South. I'm trying to somehow network my ps3 to the laptop so that I can get it online as well. I've read several articles/posts on different sites explaining how to do this with an ethernet cable. I've tried this and can never get the ps3 to configure right. It never succeeds in finding the ISP or if I enter it manually, it never gets to the next step. I know it will never be fast enough to for gaming, but I just want to be able to get the downloads. If they're are any gurus out there that can help, I would really be grateful. You can either explain on here, thru pms,ims ,or over the phone on my dime. I'm sure it is something simple I'm missing, but it's got me baffled. Thanks for any help! p.s. My ps3 is the 60 gb,it's a new DELL Inspiron pc w/vista |

When you use the ethernet cable between your PS3 and laptop, can you ping the PS3 from your laptop?
Also, I think you might need a cross-over ethernet cable instead of a straight-thru. |

I'm not sure what you mean by "ping" and I did read some about people the cross over cable, but most people sounded as if they were using a regular ethernet cable.

You will have to find out or assign a IP address to you PS3 and on you computer in the CMD screen type ping and the PS3s IP address to se if it can be found through the "network". I and pretty sure that from computer to computer(PS3) you need a crossover cable, from a router to a computer(PS3) its straight through.

try right clicking on the network card under network connections and choose bridge networks (I think that is what it is called.) have the network cable hooked to the Laptop and the Ps3, that should work... or there is always the option of an ad-hoc network using the built in wireless, but I don't recommend that route.

There was another connection named wireless something. The lan line would bridge to it but that connection was not online. Where can you get a cross over cable? |

You need a cross-over cable (like the other poster said). You also need to go through the wizard for internet sharing. Plus, you have to create a signal path all the way to your ISP through the PC. This is done by using a static IP address for your PS3 AND the PC (the PC will have TWO IP addresses (1 to talk to the PS3 and 1 to talk to the 3G side of PC). The two IP addresses on the PC actually bridges/binds the communication pathway(signal flow) through the PC to the PS3.
Example: 3G IP address for PC: 62.9.184.8 PC internal IP address (to talk to PS3): 192.168.1.1 (static/manual) PS3 IP address (static): 192.168.0.1 PS3 Gateway address: 192.168.1.1 PS3 DNS address: whatever your IP's DNS addresses are OR 192.168.1.1 PC 192.168.1.1 has to have a gateway address too (whatever the ISP's 3G default gateway address is) - same for the DNS address for the PC side interface that will talk to the PS3 directly. In other words, the 3G DNS address should be used for this interface. Another way (probably better) 3G IP address for PC: 62.9.184.8 PC internal IP address (to talk to PS3): 192.168.1.1 (static/manual) PS3 IP address (static): 192.168.1.x PS3 Gateway address: 192.168.1.1 PS3 DNS address: whatever your IP's DNS addresses are OR 192.168.1.1 PC 192.168.1.1 has to have a gateway address too (whatever the ISP's 3G default gateway address is) - same for the DNS address for the PC side interface that will talk to the PS3 directly. In other words, the 3G DNS address should be used for this interface. This way you can have a networked printer attached to your PS3 that your PC and PS3 can use. If it sets it up as a wireless access point yes, if it does it as a peer to peer sharing no.

they make routers that you can plug ur 3g card, not too pricey. should be plug and play, then you can easily share your connection like a normal cable/dsl line. i suggest going that route. trying to bridge with your wireless adaptor in a laptop can be done, but is a complicated process to setup. |

You need very specific wireless cards that can set it up as a WAP. I tried three different cards on my laptop and none of them wanted to do a WAP and all did peer to peer. Unfortunately I don't know any of them off the top of my head, I just move my PS3 to a point I can get a signal and download from there.

You need a cross over cable. PC-PC need xover all the time as far as I know. because of their pin line up. Get one save yourself the headache.

Does that mean the PS3 can pick up the Wii adaptor's signal and work?
The reason I haven't tried it is because I can't get the Wii software update for vista to unzip. It keeps saying folder is empty when I try to extract it. |

Will this work?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Wi-Fi-Wireless-U...3A1%7C294%3A50 Remember I have a 3g usb modem, if that matters. |
