A preamp is also called a surround sound processor. What it does is takes audio and video from it's input sources, seperates the audio from the video, processes and converts the audio for the listening environment, and sends that information to an external amplifier for amplification to the speakers.

A receiver is basically a preamp and amp combined. For information on the benefits of a preamp and amp setup over a receiver setup, look in the stickied threads in the audio section. There is a lot of information available.

A Pre-Amp is your processor, an amp your power. Home theater receivers house both in a single chassis.
