Default New Speakers

I was looking for new floorstanding speakers, and came across these Polk Audio's that are looking really good for the price. Any recommendations for different speakers, or any reviews on these from anyone?

Thanks.

A little further down from this forum is the Speakers forum:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/forumdisplay.php?f=67

In there is a thread on the Polk brand:

You will likely find more help over there.

That's a little too broad of a question. What Polks are you looking at and what is the price?

This s agood deal on those Polk Monitor 70, Is your budget limited to 400$ for a pair?

Is there a need for Floor standing speakers? How big is your room?

Unless you listen to 2chnl music a lot, and you have a decent subwoofer, you could save some money by going with a real nice set up bookself speakers. Always check the used market first. Some real deals can be found if you look.

Honestly, I don't really have a budget set out for this. I was just notified of these prices from an e-mail newegg sent to me, and have been looking for some good floorstanding speakers for the long run of my set up. Currently my set up is in my living room which is about 16x14. My current project is gutting my basement, and installing a theater room that is roughly the same size though.

I don't know that there is a 'need' for floorstanding speakers, I just know that in the end I want better sound, than what I currently have running.

I haven't looked at any bookshelf speakers, however I am intrigued. Do you have any sites I can check out regarding the used market, or does a simple google/amazon/ebay search do the trick?

Craigslist and your local buy/sell & trade are excellent sources. Like everything in life, you just have to do your research and check over whatever you buy.

If you have a decent subwoofer or are planning on buying one, and don't listen to a lot of 2chnl audio, a bookshelf+subwoofer setup will give fantastic audio for movies. The avg listener would be hard pressed to tell the difference. I would rather have higher end bookshelf speakers paired with a good sub over budget towers any day.

I run my theatre with bookshelves, 3 Axiom M22's and I've been happy with them. I'd like 3 M80's one day but that is pretty low on my list of priorities at the moment as the M22's fill my space just fine.

I think your current room depending on the height of the ceiling is starting to get to the size of the room and depending how loud you like to listen to your media where some floor standing speakers may provide you a little more but depending on the size of your planned theatre I'd look at book shelves too.

I use bookshelf speakers for my home theater. i also use bookshelfs for my 2-ch music, for music i never use a sub. its possible to buy bookshelf speakers with very good bass response that dont require a sub.

op, not sure what exactly youre looking for, but if you want loud and louder then polks will get loud, however they will lack resolution and bass definition, and overall accuracy. if you are serious about getting speakers that will last you a long time, then Id highly suggest that you set your sites on other brands like Focal, Monitor Audio, PSB, Paradigm, all that offer very good bookshelf speakers in or close to your current price range, or that carry floorstanders starting around $900. However if you dont mind shopping on audiogon for used speakers(make sure they have the original shipping material) but you could probably get them for half off; and find some excellent bargins.

I'll start checking around for some other options. Currently I have a subwoofer, and don't feel I need to upgrade that at the moment with how I have everything set up. I am just trying to upgrade as I go a little bit at a time (i'm sure you all know how this goes).

My current set of speakers:
http://www.klipsch.com/high-definiti...theater-system

My current receiver:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...ceivers/VSX-60

I have only had the set up since the spring, and am already trying to upgrade. This forum, along with all the posters' pictures have me wanting to upgrade all the time.

I'm going to start researching bookshelves. I appreciate the site you linked to the ones you're using. My ceiling height currently is 10 feet but will drop to 9 feet once I build my theater in the basement. The room is looking like a 16x14 room at the moment. Hopefully that helps with the input you provide. I appreciate all feedback.

Thank you for the site, i'll check that out this afternoon. I would like my sound to get louder, but I don't want to lose accuracy at all. I'm going to take a look around at some bookshelf speakers of the brands you mentioned.

I know exactly where you're coming from. I had to piece my system one at a time because I just didn't have the ability to go out and spend $4k on speakers all at once. It actually worked out for the better though because I waited until I could find sales on every speaker. The only piece I paid full retail for was my SVS PB12, every other speaker I scored on 50% off sales. Speakers go on sale all the time and if you have patience you can find phenomenal deals.

Another poster mentioned that it's possible to buy bookshelves with good low end response and not require a sub. While true, these bookshelf speakers are often very expensive and I doubt you'll be looking in that price range. Realistically speaking, I think most people will almost always want to pair their bookshelf speakers with a good sub. Adding a real subwoofer to my setup was the single greatest addition to my listening setup. Don't ever underestimate what a real good subwoofer does for a setup, especially if movies are your primary use.

true and true

My speakers are not inexpensive, they are more then most will want to spend, but they do sound like a floorstanding speaker, even better then some. And I do use a sub for movies, always! But for music, I only have 1 cd that requires I use a sub.

However, while not inexpensive, the Monitor Audio RX2, Focal 807 and Paradigm Studio 20s are less expensive then what I have and for most peoples music can play satisfying bass without a sub. But for movies, a sub would be a blessing.
