I just got in the mail to day my new ps3. It is the 160gig and I am planning on moving my motorstorm 80gig to the bedroom. I have heard that you can't transfer files through a wireless network. So since the new ones only have usb I guess I will have to go that route. So for games like call of duty 4 is my online profile on the ps3 or is on the psn? Is my best bet to copy on a usb and transfer over evertyhing in the saved game folder and the game data utiltity (might not be correct name) folder over to the new ps3.
I am planning on swithcing them out as my 80gig is a yr old and will get used less in the bedroom. Plus the new one is so much quieter and runs cooler. I have only used media card slot at the most 2 times in the yr I have had it, and have never used more then 2 usb ports at a time. So I guess what is the most painless way to transfer everything and what files are a must. Thanks |

Well when i transferred my data to my second PS3, i used a usb thumb drive and copied individual game saves. As for you COD4 online profile its probably in the game save, when i played littlebigplanet i didn't transfer the game save and playing online was as if i started over.

There's a backup and restore utility in the PS3 under system settings. Works really well. You just need to have a large enough USB drive plugged in. And it has to be formatted FAT32.
Online profiles are attached to your PSN ID and aren't part of the local drive store. You can service up to 5 PS3s from a single PSN ID. When you buy a game once, it will work on all of those PS3s. |

I'm actually not sure what is and what isn't restored. I don't/didn't have any movies though.
The only reason I mentioned it is because I had a hard drive die recently and tried to restore a backup from my other PS3. Basically, the backup I had made on my 2nd PS3 was a closer match to what I had lost on the PS3 where the drive died. So, I went that route first. It gave me the warning about trying to restore a backup from a different PS3 but I proceeded on. The restore process for an 80+ gig backup took around a minute or two so I knew it didn't restore all that much. With mine, the restore process usually takes a couple of hours. I only took a quick look for some demos I thought should have been in the backup I tried to restore and didn't see them. So, I went with the smaller 50 gig backup that was made on the actual PS3 I was replacing the hard drive on. I didn't want to have to go through everything trying to determine what was successfully restored and what wasn't. Anyway, trying to go that route first is definitely worth a shot. I just thought I should mention that it might not all get restored (and in my case, it must have skipped quite a bit). Unfortunately, I didn't take enough time to determine exactly what it skipped though. |
