Default I have 7,500 MP3's.....and I have a question!

These files are stored on an external 320GB HDD, currently attached via USB to my PC. I've been toying with the idea of attaching this drive to my PS3 so I can listen to it through my system.

Is this possible? Or does this drive still need to be connected to my PC for it to work?

How do I go about doing this and what steps do I need to take?

John

I've got a 160 GB HDD attached to my PS3 currently, and I went to go test it. It works perfectly, listening to a song right now from my USB drive.

I've got mine set up Drive->Music->Artist->Album->Songs

To view them I have to hit View All at the very top that so it will go down to the songs part. The downside I think I can't make playlists with it being off the PS3. Not 100% sure about that aspect as I have a lot of music on the PS3 and have my playlists off those songs.

Just created a playlist and it will NOT let me add songs from the USB drive to it. So that's something to consider, you will have to manually play all the songs you want from the drive.

Thanks for that..now I now it does work, which is good.

However, I think I may have to do some prep work...like creating Artist Folders or Genre Folders or somehing. I don't want to have to scan through all those songs.

Will the PS3 allow you to set playback at RANDOM?

MusicBrainz is a great MP3 tagger that will do the artist and album folders. I love it to death! It gets about 90% of them correct! Oh yeah, meant to add, absolutely no idea on the Random though, I'll look into it as soon as I can. Running out to eat! Luuunch time!

I know nothing about this stuff..... but my question is this....

Couldn't you set up file sharing on your PC with the MP3s on it, and the PS3, and have the PS3 play it via wifi network???? Not sure if that's an option.

I don't use my PS3 for streaming.... but won't it recognize playlists that you have already made on your PC if you stream the music directly from your PC, or if you have playlist files on the external drive? The 360 does this, so I would assume the PS3 could as well?

A great program to use to stream your music from your PC to your PS3 is TVersity. If you use a Mac you can use the application MediaLink. I've used both programs on each of my computers and couldn't have been happier.

I don't want to stream it. I want the external HDD attached to my PS3 without a connection to my PC.

I was just saying it was just another option. For what you're looking for, just plug it into the PS3 via USB.

Cool! Guess I'll just try it and see what happens.

I have to convert to FAT32 right? How do I do that?

Even if the HDD is NTFS, you still should be able to plug and play the mp3 files on the PS3.

If you wanted to reformat the HDD (which I don't even think is necessary) you just have to right click on the drive and select "format".

***Make sure you move all of your files to a safe place before you even think about reformatting because it will wipe everything off of your harddrive.

Thanks for your help bud! Gonna try it later this aft. If I need to, I'll convert over to FAT32. (I have another drive for back-ups, so I'm ok......but good advice nonetheless)

I'm pretty sure you have to convert it to FAT-32. (try connecting it first without formatting, but i'm pretty sure I tried it and it didn't work so I had to format it). If you are using windows XP, just connect the hard drive, right click on the drive click format, choose FAT-32 wait for it to be finished or if the hard drive is big enough you could also create a FAT-32 partition if you don't want the whole hard drive in FAT-32 for some reason.

If you need any other help, don't hesitate to PM me.

Yes it has to be converted FAT-32. There's a program Swiss Knife that works with Windows XP that allows the larger size HDDs to be formatted. Windows XP won't allow it to be fully formatted FAT-32 because of size issues.

+1. I forgot about that as that is what I used to format mine. Use swiss knife

I have about 800-1,000 vinyl LP's here (another 2,000 or so in storage) and have done a lot of tranferring over the years. Used to have about 500 CD's, but I got rid of them once I ripped them.

So yeah, I have a shitload of music on my computer.
