Default Blu-ray Destroying HD DVD in Europe!

PS3 gives Blu-ray a Boost

Impact of new console in market "significant"

PlayStation 3 gives Blu-ray disc sales a boost Image

21 May 2007 - News from the Blu-ray Disc Association suggests that the impact of PlayStation 3 on sales of Blu-ray Disc movies in North America and Japan after the launch of the console last November has been "significant".

Early market data sourced by the association indicates that a similar trend is developing in Western Europe.

Industry data for the period from 1 January until the end of April shows a change in market dynamics in the European HD software market.

Up until the PS3’s launch on 23 March, HD DVD was comfortably outselling Blu-ray discs. However, in the week after PS3 was launched in Europe, Blu-ray discs accounted for almost 87% of all HD disc sales.

In the period since 23 March, Blu-ray discs have consistently out sold HD DVD's rival product by a significant margin.

In the latest week that the figures report, Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVDs by a factor of more than three to one.

This means that despite the PS3 being available for only one month of this four-month period, Blu-ray software sales account for over 64% of the total volume since the start of the year.

For the good of the overall Blu-ray cause, it looks like these figures justify Sony's inclusion of a Blu-ray disc drive in their next-gen console, despite the delays this caused to the launch of the product and partly accounting for its high price.

Really need the weekly, monthly, year to date and since inception so we can get a fuller picture.

But until this story I hadn't seen any stats whatsoever.

...not surprised at those #'s, people were likely holding back from buying ANY HD player until the PS3 arrived (so that of those sold before PS3, they were likely mostly HDDVD sales, as it was the cheaper option at the time) but once all the choices were available, people flocked to PS3, i'm sure for it's extra capabilities, too (I sure did).

PS3 sales spike on Amazon UK after Gamer's Day
Added on 20/05/2007.

Apparently Sony's Gamer's Day had a strong effect on consumer interest in PlayStation 3. After the wave of media and impressions about titles like Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Heavenly Sword , rejoiced Brits rushed off to Amazon UK to purchase their very own PlayStation 3.

The site listed the PlayStation 3 as the most sought after item right after Gamer's Day. At that time, Nintendo's "black" DS Lite took the #5 spot, Xbox 360's premium system took the #6 spot, and Nintendo's Wii ran up the pack at #8.

Now, two days later, PlayStation 3 is still enjoying boosted sales at the #4 spot. The next step is for Sony to release some of these heavy hitters to seriously raise some interest in their high-end console.
In the words of Jules Winnfield about the second bolded statement, "EXACT-A-MUNDO!"

If blu-ray takes over all other countries is there any chance that HD-DVD could even survive in the U.S.? I mean if Europe is exploding at this rate continuosly it will be all over their, so does that mean that HD-DVD will just disappear?

Things survives in the US that don't survive elsewhere, like Winnebagoes and "American football". Vice versa, of course.

The survival timeline of HD-DVD may be stretched for a bit just because of the early adopters. But as BD players get cheaper for international sales and Region A titles made for the non-US market get accessible, the fat lady will open her mouth and...

The fact that Blu-ray holds 90+% of the HD movie market in Japan really seals the deal that this war is over. Japan leads the world in innovation and whatever hold its own there does well world wide.

Wasn't sure of how well BD was doing in Japan until the recent article.

BD for the WIN!

nice, I made the right choice of never purchasing a HD-DVD disc again when I got the PS3. Seems like I did the right choice

BTW: My 360 just died out on me last night, the colors got messed up and I reset it, now it shows up blank. I also had issues opening the DVD drive. hopefully it's still under warranty.

I'm going to say the failure rate of these things is at least 30-40% based on the number of multiple failures people have had plus anecdotal evidence in my personal sphere. Out of that 10 million M$ say they have shipped how many are refurbs, new replacements and how much have BB and EBGames made on warranties by having a lemon to sell.

Maybe I should change my sig to M$ - English for lemon.
