Default The New Yamahas Are Here!

I just went to Yamaha's website and found out they just released their new wave of A/V receivers for 2009. The biggest news is that full HDMI lossless audio processing and HD audio decoding makes it's way down the line, all the way to the new RX-V465 5.1 channel receiver. Hopefully, the on-screen GUIs have improved as well.

The replacement for the RX-V663 is the new RX-V665. It adds 2 HDMI inputs (4 total), 1080p upscaling, and has a new blue display (now on all new receivers). However, the amplifier section was stepped down slightly from the 663, which is a shame. It lists for $549, matching the suggested price of the RX-V663.

In order to get the same amplifier section of the 663 (665 total watts, 90 X 7 channels 20 Hz to 20kHz), you need to step up to the RX-V765. I don't see a new replacement for the RX-V863 yet though. It better not be the RX-V765. I hope Yamaha doesn't kill the 863's amplifier/power supply from the RX-V line, because it's really good.

Here they are:

I doubt it. Definitely call ahead before burning the gas. Last spring, the 63 series was on Yamaha's web site for a good 4-6 weeks before appearing on store shelves.

What this does mean for now is that you'll start seeing sales for 663 and 863 once dealers get their new order sheets and see new '09 models.

The V663 doesn't deliver 7 x 90 W continuous watts though. Those specifications were based on 500ms tone bursts. The small V663 power supply is only rated at 400 Watts. Don't expect more than 55 - 60 Watts continous with all 7 channels driven.

The yamaha site gives these specifications for the new RX-V series:

RX V665: 7-channel 630W powerful surround sound (90W x 7)
RX V765: 7-channel 665W powerful surround sound (95W x 7)

Jeez, there's no significant difference there. However, I would download the manuals, then go to the specifications page to find out how the power supply ratings compare.

I would think, just speculation, that the V765 will have a bigger power supply. And, if that is the case, I would expect the V765 to deliver more continuous Watts per channel with all 7 channels driven.

I wonder if the new V665 fixed the BTB and WTW clipping issue. Also, I would hope that it is supplied with a more powerful DSP chip that would allow one to matrix bitstreamed DTS-HD MA 5.1 to 7.1 channels.

I see alot of manuf. knocking the weight down a bit with different power ratings and power supplies. Onkyo did this with the 806, now Yamaha knocking the power ratings down also.

Its Amber ,Personal like it better then the blue.

There putting out recievers fast but i don't see big improvements.I mean you can add more hdmi in and outs ,change the colour of the LCD, maybe down the road change the look of the recievers all together but If there's no improvement to the sound then its just another great yamaha reciever.

Well i guess iam trying to say for myself i guess I'll be holding on to mine for a little while

That's just my two cents

Be careful how you evaluate ratings. The 665's ratings are shown at 1kHz, and not rated full range, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, so they'd be lower than what's published under a full rating. Also, yes, Yamaha is not quoting a continuous power rating - I never indicated that either. Dig into the web site and compare the 663, 665, and 765 in terms of ratings and receiver weight, which gives a strong indication of the power supply / amp section. The outgoing 663 is 7.5 lbs heavier than the 665, and it's 2 lbs heavier than the 765.

You got the point I was trying to make though. And, I think that is a valid assumption that the heavier power supply will give better performance. I would still double check that against the power consumption rating for the power supply.

Actually, Amazon already has the 565:

I am looking forward to some head to head testing and reviews of some of the new receivers by websites and/or magazines.

The bench tests showed neither the 663 or the 863 had the continuous wattage that was listed in the specs, I am only going to assume that there isn't gonna be much of a change in that with these 2 newer models either.
