I've never seen The Drowning Pool, so I'm not that interested in it, but Harper, wow. A big favourite, I saw it at the cinema all those years ago, great cast, great script & dialogue & a great story. It has that sixties fizazz.

You might want to use The Drowning Pool to pad out a 4/$44 order sometime down the road. It's been a while since I've seen TDP and while I wouldn't say it's quite as good as Harper, it's awfully good and features all the things you like about Harper.

I will point out though that Harper is very much a 60s movie in look and style. Drowning Pool is very much a 70s movie and has a drab and much more realistic feel to it. So although Drowning Pool is a sequel to Harper, it also feels like it's part of a different universe at times too. Newman is true to the character in both films, though, very sardonic and irreverent. |

Major fan of both of these and couldn’t be happier to see their release from WAC, who have been doing stunning work with films from my favorite era. I saw The Drowning Pool the day it opened here in Baton Rouge; I seem to remember South Louisiana getting it quickly presumably due to its location shooting throughout the area. Having just seen Murray Hamilton in Jaws in its premiere week before, I enjoyed his colorful turn here.
As the previous poster mentions, both are very much of their time. Perhaps due to my unbridled love for 70s cinema, I have found Drowning to get better over the years as I have screened both often. It’s a great double feature, with the swinging atmosphere and smartass tone of much of the first evolving to something a bit more melancholy and seasoned in the second. Both are stacked with great casts to the smallest roles and fine technical work. I’m particularly excited to see the blu upgrade benefit some of the darker photography in Drowning. I can’t wait to own them and heartily recommend them as a pair. |

I like HARPER a lot, but THE DROWNING POOL isn't anywhere near as good. It has little of the style or wit of the first one, and is slow and drab in comparison. I watched it on Turner Classic Movies a few months ago. HARPER is a movie I don't even need to wonder if I should get on Blu-ray, but THE DROWNING POOL... I don't feel I ever need to see it again.

It's been years, but I seem to remember The Drowning Pool being far more involving than Harper, which left me rather cold.
I'm in for both, but it's easily the least of the "Golden H of Newman" series. Stiff competition there. |
