Default External speakers for Sony 46" XBR4.

I'm not sure if this post should be in this section or not.

My Dad has a Sony 46" XBR4 TV that he loves but he finds the internal speakers are not quite loud enough.
He would like to get external stereo speakers for this TV but he does not have space for an A/V receiver.

I have two questions:

1.) Can he connect external speakers to the outputs of this TV?

2.) If the answer to first question is "Yes", would external speakers connected to this TV be any louder than the internal speakers?

Thanks,
Zak

It may be able to be done with some powered computer speakers, but I have never actually tried it before.

Would he ever consider a sound bar? No reciever needed, the reciever is built into the subwoofer. Look at my gallery for a better idea. Its a simple solution for simple people who want something better than their tv speakers but dont have space or money for full surround. BTW my soundbar is the HTCT100, you can see reviews on Sony Style and Amazon, i purchased mine for $259 via Sony Style.

Yes, you can simply plug computer speakers into the TV via the headphone jack. On my Samsung, this eliminates the EQ though. It definitely sounds better/louder than TV speakers.

Does he have a budget? If he wants to do it cheap, go with a soundbar or HTIB.

If he's willing to dig deeper, go with an AVR and Speakers.
