What do you mean by "receiver has them at 6"?

If you mean the receiver only has a 6 ohm option and nothing else, leave it there. A receiver that is rated for 6 ohm speakers can easily handle 8 ohm speakers. A 6 ohm speaker draws more current from a receiver than an 8 ohm speaker.

If the receiver has another option for 8 ohm speakers, set it to that option. It is best to read the manual.

Leave it at 6 ohm. I encourage you to read the manual. Each receiver is different.

Do you mean that the volume knob was on 60 and you turned it up to 70 and could not hear any difference?

The minimum loudness that human beings can detect is 1 db. In order to hear the difference in volume, you should play test tones. Watching a movie is not a good way to judge the volume on a receiver.

You should run the calibration program and leave it there. Do not worry too much about individual movies. Unfortunately, different movies are recorded differently and there are a lot of differences between sound engineers and studios. Some movies are very loud and some aren't. On some movies, you have a lot of trouble hearing the conversations from the center channel and then all of a sudden there is an explosion that will make your ears bleed. It is like that in movie theaters. When my family and I went to see Hulk in a theater, we had trouble hearing the conversations and then we all had to cover our ears during special effects.

For movies that you have trouble with the conversation, turn the center channel a couple of db's higher.

Also remember that a lot of Warner titles do not go to the initial setup menu and default to Dolby Digital. You have to change audio manually.
