Default Ambien

I recently got a prescription for 10mg Ambien (zolpidem). The day after I take it, I get extremely irritable. Does anyone else take this? Does the irratibility only last the first few days/weeks? I take hydroxyzine(200mg) and lamotrigine(100mg) to keep me calm throughout the day, but they do nothing if I take an Ambien.

Hardcore insomnia. I was taking 7/8 OTC sleeping pills a night before I got the Ambien.

Must be pretty powerful stuff then! Hope it's not addictive.

Sadly, it's highly addictive. That's why I can only take it 5 times a week.

I take Xanax every once and a while (prescribed), I get the same way. I chalk it up to being tired. I feel like I am in a constant slumber on that stuff, I try to take it sparingly...

I took Ativan (xanax-like benzo) a few times and thought I was going to die.

That actually happened to me after a night of Scotch/Rocks. Haven't touched it since. That was 1982.

Haven't tried, probably worth looking into.

Much worse than alcohol. You feel normal and feel like you are functioning normal, then you sit down and you fall asleep. Wake up and have no idea what happened hours before.

Ambien is known for having very few side effects, I've never heard people complain about that side effect before, sorry.

I prescribe it a fair bit, and it is usually well tolerated without many side effects. However, irritability with the various prescription sleep meds out there is not unheard of. How long are you sleeping after you take it?

You could try taking 5mg at bedtime to see if that has any less of the irritability the next day while still letting you get to sleep. Otherwise, you could try Lunesta, which also has a low side effect profile, although it will be a bit more pricey. Outside of these two, benzodiazepines are the next most common class of drugs used for sleep (typically restoril, although diazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam, versed have also been used) although there tends to be more side effects with these such as oversedation and amnesia (particularly with versed).

Neither benzo's, Ambien, or Lunesta are particularly physically addictive, although they can be psychologically addictive if used/relied upon long enough.

Other than these meds, melatonin is the most common "nutritional supplement" used for a sleep aid, and there is a little science behind it as melatonin produced by the pineal is thought to be important for sleep-wake cycles in humans. But whether or not taking melatonin actually helps sleep is not clear.

Hope this helps...

Dude, it's seriously scary stuff when that happens. I took one (Xanax) at work once, and next thing I know it's the next day. My co-workers were telling me about stuff that I did, and I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. I had absolutely no memory of the entire night. Apparently I worked about 4 hours of my shift and then went home sick. No idea how I got in the cab, told the cab driver where I lived, or made it in the house. Barely touched the stuff since unless I'm like WAY in a bad mood.

Ambien can give you crazy ass dreams. I took it once and had a terrible experience.

I didn't feel like I was in control of my body. I hated it. I don't remember being irritable. But be careful on that stuff.
