Default When is a blu ray disc not a blu ray disc?

Hi I'm new and do hope someone can help!
I've got a Loewe HD TV with Loewe BluRay player. Both extremely expensive but fantastic results.
Just tried playing the new BluRay disc of Bond's Quantum of Solace and it recognises the disc ok and starts playing it then gets a message which is clearly being read from the disc from MGM telling me I need to update my system! What's this all about please? - it's a top of the range player with the latest software update. Surely a blu ray disc is a blu ray disc - or are there different sorts and if so how do I tell the difference?
Thanks.
Kev

It seems there are always newer firmwares as the new blu rays keep coming out.I use a PS 3 and update it via the internet, but never have had a blu ray not play.A blu ray is always a blu ray though.

No worries man, its normal. Companies put out updates for their players. This is normal. Just do the update and all will be okay.

BD does have different profiles, but they are for extra features
BD 1.0 - normal BD
BD 1.5 - Bonus view (you can see extra content in a PiP while watching the movie)
BD 2.0 - BD live ( you can DL content off of the internet)

That being said, like others said before, what can be put on BD disks can be much more complex then on DVD. And since it is so new manufacturers don't know exactly what studios will do. Every so often a studio will try something new on a title that does not go against the specs but that the manufacturer did not think of and envision and so that code will have issues with the player. The manufacturer then creates an update for the player.
