I was wondering, which receiver if the best between the Sony STRDG and the Onkyo TX-SR.
I see there's a difference of 300$ between each (the sony is the cheapest) but for quality, are they the same of the onkyo is really that better? And in the spec I often see something like : 105 Watts X 7 Amplifier Power (8 ohms, 1Khz, 1.0% THD) or the samething but with 0.08% What is the % ? |

Believe it stands for "Total Harmonic Distortion" ... ie, how much it's going to distort. Lower= better, and the Sony's is kind of high, honestly.
*edit* lol, I had brought this up earlier and walked from my desk. Didn't realize it had already been answered. ![]() |

There is a $300 difference in those 2 receivers? I thought the Onkyo was around $500 and the Sony a little less?
I hate Sony receivers. I had one. It was a POS. They publish these lofty numbers they never come close to and their performance and build quality is sh!t. Onkyo, Yamaha, Pioneer are the three I would be looking at in the $500 range. |

Go with Onkyo, Sony has terrible RMS output rates at high volumes. It goes anywhere from 55W out of 140W for the Sony to 120W out of 180W for the Onk. (just to compare)

Finally I completly changed my mind, I wasn't able to find any receiver in canada at a good price, and I have found a Yamaha HTR6150 for 259$ CAN on futureshop, so I have decide to order this one
Now I must find some good speaker/sub to go with it |

both are good receivers. i always used to use sony receivers and they always performed very well imho. i switched to onkyo because of the great deal i got ont he 605 and it too is a great receiver. you need to go and listen to them though as they both have different sound characteristics, only then will you be able to make an informed decision

I had an Onkyo 605 and decided to purchase a sony STR-DG920. Personally, the Sony out-performs the Onkyo. Your comparison, however, is the Onkyo 706 and the Sony 820. It is like racing a Ford Mustand against a BMW M5. It isn't a fair comparison, hence the $300 price difference.

The Sony 920 I would say falls somewhere inbetween the Onkyo 606 and 706, but closer to the 606 then the 706. The 920 was built like the Pioneer 1018, based on just about all the same specs and so forth of the ES line (like the 1018 was to the Pioneer Elites) but with a few features taken away. Personally I thought this was where Sony and Pioneer got it right with their TRULY mid-level receivers.
