Default Blu-Ray Back Up Copies

Can you make back up copies of Blu-Ray movies, because I usually make a copy of any DVD I buy so that I can use the copy instead.

It's so annoying when you have to buy a film again because of a scratch the original or you lose the original in a hotel room or something.

Well apparently you can dump the ISO image onto your hard-drive, which you could (potentially) use as your back-up copy. I don't know the legal ramifications of doing this though...

I would not be sure that you can use the copy for anything... I doubt that it is playable.

there is the managed copy that is allowed, not sure how to do it but supposedly you should be able to rip a copy to your computer for this

So you can't actually burn another copy for yourself, I would have thought that as long as you have the original you could make just 1 authorised copy, like with Sony's Minidisc.
Maybe enter a code on the box or something.

Yes, that's the plan (at least that's my understanding, anyway). Blu-Ray will have Managed Copy Protection that will allow you to make 1 back-up copy or stream it over your home network. However, I don't think all the details have been worked out yet.

That's all I want anyway so if they sort that out It will be great, I just HATE scratching a disc and having to re-buy the same one.

Here's some info on the Managed Copy Protection. This is from July of this year. Lots of details...

At this point I don't think you can do anything.

Managed Copy is stuck pending finalization of AACS (which was suppose to be done for launch, then July, then the fall, then the end of the year).

The disc contents are encrypted. So, without the media key the software couldn't decrypt it for decoding. The media key comes from the vendor using their vendor key on their slot(s) in the media key block of the disc, which contains the media key encrypted multiple times with all the vendor keys that have been assigned.

I believe the part of the disc containing the media key block is inaccesible unless the proper handshake occurs.

That's the same for HD DVD and Blu-ray.

For BD, if a full copy could be made (preserving all the encryption), the ROM Mark can't be, since it is incorporated into the stamping master using extremely tightly licensed mastering equipment. And all licensed players are required to check for the ROM Mark if they detected protected content.

Well TDK claim that it can withstand a screwdriver, so unless your children have screwdrivers (I sincerely hope they don't) I doubt you have anything to worry about.

Lol, I would treat my BDs with the same care as I do with my DVDs, if not with even more care Anyway, I wont treat them rougher just because they've got better coating. Better prefent than to heal.

Yes you can. Currently using PS3 BD drive were made successful attempts to dump BD movie or game.

A dump of a game is nowhere near a backup, there will be all sorts of problems copying the dump to another BD, emulating AACS and the ROM-mark.

Well DVD Jon (of DeCSS fame) gave a timeframe of 12-18 months but he then said that BD is going to be very difficult to crack because of the ROM-mark, I hope not.

And they have. Someone on AVS (too lazy to go look) has made this claim in response to this topic.

Please note that although all 25 and 50g BD disks requires a hard coat, I think only TDK is using the TDK hard coat. I don't know how the BD requirements stack up against the TDK specs, so TDK might (or might not) have a much better hard coat than the average BD-ROM disk you buy.

Hi, I realise this is an old thread, but now that Blu-Ray is available and in wider usage, did the issues mentioned in this thread ever get sorted out? Is there now any software for making a backup copy of a BD? I do the same thing as the person who mentioned before, it's much better to keep original safe and use a copy so you are immune to natural "wear and tear"

Thanks for any help
