I was actually arguing this same concept in a thread yesterday. Funny how that works.

I love big beefy amps, which is why I won't buy class D amps, which is found in all of these cheap, low end receivers because they are cheaper to make and therefore cheaper to buy, passing on the savings and lower performance to the consumer.

I've thought this very thing since the inception of HD audio.

I've tried a few different generations of AV receivers since i got a Denon 5803. All of them have left me underwhelmed, to the point i really couldn't justify changing. I preferred the older stuff from denon both musically and for the sheer power that they had to offer. IMO all the features in the world are no replacement for stunning sound.

Not so long ago i had the choice of a new receiver or a multi ch power amp. After much thought and a few demos of new receivers, i chose the power amp. I still need good power from my receiver as i use all 6ch's into my front speakers.

I will admit to seeing very few demos of HD sound, but they never really impressed me enough to change what i have. My change to BD was for the increase in picture quality, when a receiver shows a significant enough gain (audio wise), maybe then i'll change. Till then, it's core DD/DTS for me...

Now that you have that amp though, the next thing to upgrade would be a good pre/pro from a reputable company. Get something good, that will make those features worth while because they arent cheap versions of the features you want!!

The thing is though, i use the 6ch into my front two speakers + subs. The receiver is used to run the centers and rears and needs plenty of power to keep up.

The reason/s i do this is the bass, it's simply jaw dropping since i removed the plate amps. The other main reason is i listened to a lot of music (more than movies), am now finding though it's more 50/50. I neither have the space nor the funds to shell out those $$$ again for another power amp.
