Default Is 24fps at 1080i impossible?

Is it impossible to enjoy 1080i at 24fps?

You will never enjoy 24p on a retail hardware disc playback device at 1080i.

You can do it with a HTPC tho.

Why is that?

So people are forced to get 1080p?

As far as ATSC Specs are concerned, 1080p24 and 1080p24S are official specs. 1080i is just 30fps for the most part.

Does this make a difference as far as motion-judder is concerned?

Is motion-judder more or less apparent at 1080p 60hz compared to 1080i?

The player and set would need to support 1080p/24sF (segmented frame), which means 1080i/48 timings, and the set displays at 48Hz.

50Hz European timings allow for no judder, but at the cost of speed up (which is staggeringly noticeable).

If you did feed a progressive display with 1080i24, it would deinterlace to 1080p12. 12fps is not something even watchable. You would need a 1080i48 feed to be deinterlaced to 1080p24.

Currently the only displays on the market that have a 1080P/24 input are a few 720P displays and some 1080P displays. Absolutely no one makes a 480I, 480P, and 1080I display with a 1080P/24 input.

Ok.

For those people who have a 720 (768?) display, then, is it still somewhat possible to get 24fps, or an equivalent? How?

Yes some Pioneer 720P Plasma’s have a 1080P/24 input. The Pioneer 720P plasma will down convert 1080P/24 material to 720P/24. Pioneer plasma’s with 1080P/24 inputs then refresh 24 frames to 72HZ to reduce judder. 35mm and 70mm film in the theater are refreshed at 48HZ or 72HZ.

Yes just look for the feature when looking for a tv, but if your tv today does not support it, then you will not be able to get it.
