Default Sony shrugs off iPhone, mobile games threat

http://www.mobile-ent.biz/news/32821...e-games-threat

Quote:
PSP is "always going to win out" as a dedicated games machine, says UK boss.

Sony Computer Entertainment UK MD Ray Maguire has shrugged off any perceived threat to the company's PSP handheld from Apple's iPhone, and mobile gaming in general.

Speaking in an interview with ME sister magazine MCV to be published tomorrow, Maguire also says Sony is actively targeting the kinds of 'snacking' games that are prevalent in mobile.

Asked if Sony is feeling any pressure from iPhone, he said: "The mobile phone market for games has been around for a number of years, [but] the overall quality - despite some strong titles there - has been limited because of the different handsets and infrastructure in that business.

"The iPhone has the advantage of being a single device and is growing a reasonable installed base, but [it] doesn't have the production power that a PSP has. As a specific games machine, the PSP is always going to win out.

"We're in a great position to take on the interest in these snacking games and produce them at better quality, lower prices, with lower cost of development - that's a great business model."
i'm down for some of the smaller, cheaper games that cells provide. keep bringing it sony!

I would shrug them off too. No mobile phone will ever be a "real" gaming device in my eyes. Gaming on a phone is nothing more than a novelty to me, something to do while i wait on my order at Wendy's to be ready.

they're quickly becoming very powerful little machines. there's just been so many different configurations in the past that it was hard to sell games. but now that everyone is cloning the iphone...

I just don't see it happening. It failed the first time for a reason. Its like a game comes out on PSP and PS3. which are you most likely gonna buy it for, PS3 right. why play on a little PSP when you can game on a better machine. so why game on a phone when you can game on something better like a PSP or DS?

IMHO they should at least be on the lookout and be aware of it, while we've had a lot of PSP announcements lately, let us not forget the iPhone is making waves with some big publisher backing as well:

MGS Touch - Kojima and Konami chose to develop their next MGS handheld experience on the iPhone, not the PSP
Bethesda next handheld game will be for the iphone even though we were promised an Elder Scroll game back in 2006 and Fallout would work great on PSP

There are more rumored iphone games:

http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhon...re.asp?c=11804

IDK, I wouldn't be complacent if I was Sony.

have you not seen the mainstream games already coming to the iphone, or bioshock to other phones? its already happening.

i've been into smartphones for awhile. with everyone making phones similar to the iphone, it'll be easy to market games to everyone because they'll all have the same basic controls. which has been a huge problem in the past.

altho..i'm not saying it can rival the ds/psp if thats what you mean

fyi..there's a toshiba phone coming out this year with a very powerful 1ghz processor. cell phone..

The psp is the ultimate portable system in my feelings.. all they needed to add were FM receiver on the headphones then perfect.

You dont understand that is a case study.. showing that games and cellphones usually go down hill.. smart phones bahh.. if sony wanted to the psp would be able to walk over them in 2 seconds.

And im my thinking smart phones are not so great.. there expensive and require expensive data packages or your sunk in large bills.

I think sonys market on the portable game system is the more likeably in my opinion but maybe im too blind to see the truth.

the PSP also needs more media file support, and better/more games. withuot that, the iphone will outsell it any day of the week. it takes a super geek to rip music and videos into a PSP, where it takes a dumb block like my sister to use an iphone to its full extent.

also smartphones are cheap as dirt.

i got a blackjack 2 for $50, and my data plan is $65/month with unlimited everything. i added another number with 1000 minutes and unlimited text for $30 more.

people, never forget that phone companies are your ***** and they will do anything to keep you happy and not give your money to the competition. haggle with them and yuo'll get a great deal.

That's just the thing.... the vast majority of adults care nothing at all about purchasing a mobile gaming device... including most gamers. However, everyone has a phone and will gladly purchase games for a device they already carry around anyway. Sure a dedicated portable gaming device would probably provide a better gaming experience but who cares if noone wants to buy it? For all intents and purposes; portable gaming devices are in the realm of child's play which is why the child friendly DS continuously spanks the more adult oriented PSP in sales.

Really, though, what's Sony going to say? They can't exactly say they feel threatened.

i won't dismiss the fact that the ds/psp basically has the entire handheld gaming market wrapped up. but with the releases apple keeps announcing, and all the new phones and games coming up. they're going to start chipping away at that market.

will they ever overtake? hell no, but that doesnt mean sony should just brush it off like no biggie

I got an iPhone OG when it came out and an iPhone 3G when it came out. I'd NEVER use either of them for serious gaming. They could compete with the wii handheld but that's about it. Most of the games focus on moving the phone this way and that which gets old quick.

Mine knows it owns our souls as its the only carrier with actualy signal...
For a unlimited package per number $80 a month, I don't like to buy there mobile games or aps because they usually epensive or are expensive and have monthly fees..

I can buy a psp game cheaper then games for my mobile phone that have terrible graphics and no playability... Hmmm..

OH AND Pepelutivruski4 how many more games should it have it has over 400 psp games..

Ill admit when I was young I had a gameboy, I loved it, then I went gameboy color and that was my last gameboy...

I just recently became a psp user ive always wanted one, im not sure if it was the geek in me, the gadget want, or something else...

But I really am impressed I no longer bring my phone for media purposes it just sits in my pocket, I no longer even look at my phone, because the psp smoked it.

Yes but why do so many people want to be turned into shadow puppets?
I have no idea what sony should do on that, as I assume the highly paid executives no more about sony's handheld market then I the IT guy at a airline that may fly one day.

And that is your choice +1 to freedom of choice and the free market.

likethe xbox, there are a sheetload of games and only a handful worth their price.
if another 400 gaems came out, only 10 of those would be worth their price tag.

Loco Rocco 2 has a pricetag of $20, taht's the best value i've seen for a PSP game so far. the most expensive mobile phone game i've ever seen is $8 and my wife has been playing that game on her free mobile phone since december of '07.

i'm sorry, but even patapon which i believe to be a masterpiece can only be played so much. most ppl claim chains of olympus to be the best PSP game and being a fan of god of war, i could do w/out ever playing chains of olympus, it's not worth the discomfort of playing on a handheld for me.

i personally want a PSP, but it's too big and useless after so long. i've been dying for a good excuse to make the purchase.

at the rate things are and are going, the PSP will never (i'm hoping i'm wrong and real soon) outweigh the efficiency of playing cheap quality games with great value on a mobile phone, beit free mobile phones, smartphones, or iphone that we all have in our pockets or purses already. considering all of hte above are already have cameras, wmp or itunes support and from what i heard on some, incredible audio playback quality.

but anyway, saying anything other than "PSP rules!" will get me an infraction by shin-ra. god forbid forums are for sharing one's opinion.

this thread is about sony's responses to mobile phone gaming and sony has no choice but to shrug it off... what else can they do?
work harder at making sure their product competes? step it up sony!!! i want to believe in you

Im sorry but on my mobile carrier the games go up to $9.99 and up last I checked... $4.00 if you agree to pay a monthly fee to play the game...

I have to say I thought it was pretty cool to go to my ps3 rip a cd and then copy the cd album directly to my psp using the ps3 controller charge cable.

I also carry my psp in my shirt pocket at work... The psp 3000 is smaller lighter, and the disc tray simplified...

I dunno I havent played all 423 psp games.. as I am a new psp user, but the ones I have played ive enjoyed..

Syphon Filter Logans Shadow
Star Ocean 1
Phantasy Star Portable
Harvey Birdman
Rtype Command

I actually hated Patapon, of course Ive never liked rytmetric games...

Also you can transfer ps 1 games *from the store* off of your ps3 to your psp I did this with Suikoden and Syphon Filter, and you can transfer the saves.

Portable Jrpgs I consider a blessing.. lets just say when I turn my psp but a few weeks ago it was a religious experience for me.

But that was me...

Though I made 2 mistakes I let the gamestop lady con me into the large bundle with a movie I didn't want, and a small thumbstick, which I have discovered im going to be needed a much bigger one

Here is the list of psp games that I painstankly compiled..
