I know this won't go over well with a lot of people here and would probably not be feasible anytime soon. Like with VHS before it, I think eventually studios need to stop releasing new movies on DVD. This will help it die faster than it is right now. Who's with me?

Even though I don't think Blu-ray players are expensive but however most dvd owners think they are which leads to people not buying a Blu-ray player because people just want the price to drop by like 50%. Plus not everyone has a HDTV yet. This economy right now is not helping anything either. DVD probably won't even die till like maybe 2012 or later at this rate.

Having worked for Target for a while, I saw that people who came in for a $149 19" CRT TV couldn't be talked into a $199 LCD. If you look at other major technological countries such as Japan and parts of Europe, these older technologies are obsolete and just not used anymore. |

When DVD first arrived, wasn't the idea of being able to buy movies at an affordable price on day one the big novelty compared to VHS? I thought VHS took longer for customers to buy and was more expensive. Then the whole TV show on DVD idea occurred which was great. In DVD to BD there main difference is quality now, VHS to DVD was a much bigger transition.
And yeah, ****in' economy probably doesn't help. |

Hmm, I think its more like 2016. When I scan everyone I know, only a very small fraction own a HDTV. I don't think DVD is going away anytime soon. I actually think its possible that DVD never dies completely.

If the Powers That Be wanted to accelerate the process, they could eliminate the extras, special and collectors editions for DVDs, and market those items exclusively to Blu Ray. You wouldn't kill the DVD format for those who are reluctant or unable to migrate, but you might succeed in converting many others more quickly. No idea how licensing and ownership rights play into that suggestion.

It will take some time. Blu-rays are much farther along then DVD's were at this stage so that is promising. Here is something I found on wikipedia about VHS; a little perspective:
DVD rentals surpassed VHS rentals in the US in 2003, surprising some industry officials. By 2006, most major film studios stopped releasing new movie titles in VHS format, opting for DVD-only releases. DVD began mass release in very late 1997. So.... |

i don't think dvd's will truly go away. neither will crt tv's. they're both just more practically in many cases. like for cars and in the portable arena for example. i just don't see portable hdtv's and portable blu-ray players catching on. blu-ray is about picture and sound. hamper one and blu-ray just isn't quite the same. plus the quality of blu-ray on very small screens is less than to be desired. i think this will be the first time in technological history where we see two formats at the same time still hanging around.

it's going to happen.......eventually. can't just stop coming out with dvds when the majority of the world still buys them and force people into a new technology. cuz that will go over well
![]() in time, just like with vhs, dvds will slow down in production, blu ray prices will fall, and the transition will happen....in time.... |

I've been saying for awhile that it would be awesome if they started releasing Blu-rays before they released the DVD, like they used to release the DVD a few months before the VHS was available to purchase. I wouldn't be nearly as much of a gap, since the turnaround time for theatrical release to home release is about half of what it once was. But, a month of Blu-ray exclusivity for every title would certainly make me want to buy. That was one of the main reasons I got into DVD at first.

LOL looks like people missed the part where I said this probably couldn't be done anytime soon and it should only be done eventually. This is something I see happening in say 2011 or 2012 as DVD does begin to be phased out into little more than a cheap recording medium or a novelty.

2. Extras and bonus features on Blu only I see this as a method to force adoption that could be perceived as a "reason to upgrade" |
