20th Century Studios has engaged 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg to direct the fifth installment in the Predator series. The script is being written by Patrick Aison, whose producer/writer credits include the series Kingdom, Jack Ryan and Treadstone.

They are keeping the plot line under wraps for the moment, but I’m told it won’t swing back to the developments in the last film. Fox made its last entry in the 2018 thriller The Predator. That film was directed by Shane Black, who played one of the original castmembers in the 1987 film that kicked off the series and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. Black played one of the team of commandos who winds up being tracked and killed in gory fashion by the extraterrestrial hunter. ×

Hmm, interesting. Very solid choice for director, so I'm in.

As one of the five or six people who actually enjoyed The Predator, I look forward to this.

The concept has nowhere to really go does it but that was true after the first film. The original is a classic film, the second pretty good and everything after a bag of crap imo but who knows. I will see it but expectations are fairly low.

I like Trachtenberg, but honestly wish his effort was placed somewhere else.

You don't think someone like him could elevate it a bit? I think he's kind of perfect for this. Seems to have a knack for the genre.

The problem I had with this franchise was it's insistence on taking this one single depiction of a species and making that into what the entire species as a whole is all about. By the time AvP came around and introduced the Predator species as heavily influencing Humanity and unleashing the xenomxrphs onto our planet, I couldn't take it seriously anymore. Does this species do ANYTHING ELSE besides hunt?

Yes, they get together for a monthly dance off but they keep it under wraps.

There is, in theory, still plenty of potential in the franchise. We could have a Predator film set during the WW2 Pacific War or the Vietnam War, or fighting cowboys in the Wild West, or conquistadors in South America or plenty of other time periods throughout history.

I promise you we will never see a successful Predator movie set in the past.

Is a different time really a sign of inspiration? It might be a good starting Point, but won't change the basic premise.

Of course. The basic premise will never change: predator/s pops down to Earth to hunt humans for a bit of sport. A different time period might add something fresh to what is now a stale franchise.

Ultimately though, the original is one of the greatest films ever made, so it really doesn’t matter what else they come up with, as it will never surpass the original anyway. “Stick around.”

Oh... what?

This small bit of information marries up with what Alien vs. Predator Galaxy was told regarding the upcoming Predator 5. According to our own sources Predator 5 will be set in the past (finally!) where it will focus around Native Americans before the territories were taken by the American settlers, featuring a First Nations cast. It seems quite likely that Skulls is actually Predator 5, perhaps a working title or codename.
Well, it takes place in the past. Guess we can move past that argument, if indeed this is true.

For the record, totally into this concept if it's true. The OP states it will follow the developments of Shane Black's film though? Welp.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Reportedly Interested In Doing New Predator Movie

Quote:
Arnold Schwarzenegger may have played the Terminator five times over a span of 35 years, but outside of his career-defining role, the action icon doesn’t generally tend to make a lot of sequels. In fact, if you discount his recurring cameo appearances in The Expendables, then the actor hasn’t done a direct follow-up to any of his other movies since 1984’s Conan the Destroyer.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped people from making them without his involvement, with sequels to Predator, Kindergarten Cop, Jingle All the Way and Escape Plan arriving over the last two decades, while continuations of Total Recall, Twins and True Lies were all in the works at various points before eventually coming to nothing.

Schwarzenegger had been offered a role in Predator 2, Predators and The Predator, but turned each one of them them down, even though fans would have loved to have seen an older and more grizzled Dutch stomp back onto the scene chewing a cigar and getting reacquainted with his extraterrestrial archenemies. And while the franchise is on hiatus now after Shane Black’s R-rated hybrid of sequel and reboot bombed at the box office, history has shown that no recognizable property is ever out of the picture for too long.

On that note, insider Daniel Richtman is claiming this week that not only are Disney in the early stages of developing yet another relaunch through the newly rebranded 20th Century Studios, but they want to succeed where every other Predator movie since John McTiernan’s classic original has failed and convince Schwarzenegger to make a comeback.

The 73 year-old may have helped run the Terminator into the ground, but the rest of his most famous characters remain largely untouched, and while he’s already knocked back Predator three times, Richtman claims that he’s interested in returning now. There’s no word yet on what form this new project may take, but if Schwarzenegger does indeed sign on, then it’ll no doubt generate a huge amount of interest from the fanbase.
